2024 League One playoff final tie confirmed with ticket allocations announced

The 2024 League One playoff final tie has now been confirmed with ticket allocations announced now that the semi finals are complete.

Bolton Wanderers were the first team to secure their spot in the League One playoff final, despite a 3-2 loss to Barnsley in a thrilling second leg at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The Trotters’ victory of 3-1 at Oakwell in the first leg put Ian Evatt’s team in a strong position for the game.

Goals from Aaron Collins and Eoin Toal in the first half canceled out Sam Cosgrove’s goal, giving Wanderers a 5-2 lead on aggregate.

Barnsley fought back in the second half, with a deflected goal from Adam Phillips and another header from Cosgrove bringing the Tykes within one goal of forcing extra time.

Despite late pressure, Bolton held on and are now just one win away from returning to the Championship after a five-year absence.

They knew that they would face either Peterborough United or Oxford United at Wembley on Saturday, May 18th, with Oxford having a 1-0 advantage going into the second leg on Wednesday.

How did it play out? The Posh started the better on the attacking front in the first half, but Des Buckingham’s side did well to frustrate them.

Peterborough went ahead on 41 minutes, level on aggregate, when Harrison Burrows sent over a beautiful free-kick from the left to the far post, with Josh Knight escaping his marker and slide the ball into the back of the net.

Then in added time of the first half, Cameron Brannagan smashed the free-kick straight at Harrison Burrows, who put his arms in front of him and conceded a spot-kick. A confident kick from penalty specialist Cameron Brannagan put Oxford 2-1 on aggregate, sending the ball into the bottom right as Jed Steer dived the same way.

On the 90th minute, Jonson Clarke-Harris saw a downward header from a corner cleared off the line by sub Sam Long. Then seven minutes later, keeper Jamie Cumming somehow clawed Josh Knight’s stooping header off the line and send them to Wembley.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt: “That was unenjoyable! Credit to Barnsley, they were excellent and showed great character and desire. For us it’s another learning curve. We’re ahead in the game and a simple error gives them momentum again. We didn’t react well to that goal, and then they had opportunities.

“It was nail-biting, and it didn’t need to be that way. But we have to enjoy it and we’ve done enough over the two games to be there. Now, we’re one game away from our target. And in the next day or two get set for what is going to be a big week in preparation.”

Barnsley interim manager Martin Devaney: “I’m so proud of the lads in how we performed tonight. In the first half and obviously coming in at 2-1 down we spoke about character, believing in ourselves and sticking to the game plan. The boys executed it so I’m really proud of them.

“For myself, I care about this football club and I know what it means to the fans. So hopefully after that performance, the players have shown how much we care.”
