Stevenage confirm permanent managerial appointment following departure of Steve Evans

Stevenage confirm the permanent managerial appointment of Alex Revell following the departure of Steve Evans, who left for Rotherham.

Boro have been searching for his replacement since the 17th of April, and since then the club gave first-team coach Revell the job of leading the club in their final two matches, in which they drew against playoff finalists Oxford United and a won against Cheltenham Town on the final day of the League One season.

Revell was made clear favourite with the bookies for the permanent position and now he’s been given the job as 2024/25 season preparations begin.

Revell was previously appointed as Stevenage manager in February 2020, but after 18 months in which he won 20 of his 77 games in charge, drew 30 and lost 27, he was replaced by Paul Tisdale in November 2021.

But he then had a stint with the academy, with Revell then brought back into the first-team setup by Evans.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Stevenage have confirmed Alex Revell as First Team Manager, following the departure of Steve Evans in April…

Chairman Phil Wallace said, “We’ve taken our time to consider various candidates, but we believe the dynamics of our squad dictated that Alex was the natural successor to Steve. Alex knows the players, he’s been part of the original recruitment metric and, importantly, he’s held in high esteem by the dressing room. However, we wanted to improve our chances of success on the pitch by providing an experienced coach/assistant manager with in-game expertise and years of experience winning games.

“In this regard, we’ve also appointed the Management Team that Alex has chosen with Neil Banfield joining as Assistant Manager/First Team coach and Scott Cuthbert taking over Alex’s former number three role”.

Neil Banfield was at Arsenal for 21 years, progressing through the Academy coaching positions before being appointed as First Team coach under Arsène Wegner in 2012, a position he held for six years. This was followed in 2019 by three years as First Team coach at QPR in the Championship, before moving in November 2022 with QPR manager Michael Beale to Glasgow Rangers as First Team coach. He left that position in December 2023.

Scott Cuthbert needs no introduction to Boro’ fans having captained the Club and making 139 appearances for Stevenage in a career that spanned 20 years. It’s great to welcome him back.

Mr Wallace continued, “We had options of managers with more experience, but there’s never a guarantee the dressing room will buy into someone new and our dressing room this year is special. We have a group of hard working, great characters and we wanted to retain the identity we’ve created. These players have a respect and trust in Alex that we have built upon by adding proven coaching ability and experience in Neil”.

“There are never any guarantees in football, but we believe this is the right management team to establish us as a League One club that can push the big boys all the way”.

A Press Conference to meet Alex, Neil and Scott will be held in the Club’s 76 Lounge at The Lamex Stadium at 11am tomorrow. All are welcome to attend, with questions taken from the press and media.

This is how fans reacted as Stevenage confirm the permanent managerial appointment following the departure of Steve Evans…

@charliejvaughan: The revellution 🤌🏼

@k_searle04: Definitely deserved. Better with the experience he’s had over the last couple of seasons. Top class man. The Revellution has begun.

@abs_rufc: Ruined my Thursday.

@Den_AFC: I mean I’m assuming they still have the money gained from Evans’ clause to use if it doesn’t work out. I’m neither on or off the fence about this. They are just giving him a chance that’s all.

@StephenJPike: Delighted for him and can’t wait for the new season. Alex Revell’s barmy army 🔴👏🏻

@RobGWarren4: I hope I’m wrong, but I’m very uninspired by this. Like him, don’t think he’s managerial quality though. Prove me wrong Revs.

@FarleySFC94: REVS!!!!! So excited to get behind Revs and the team!! Couldn’t be happier for him and we’ve got the perfect set up!! 🔴⚪️

@ThomasSavory4: Let’s see how this goes then. UTB ⚪️ 🔴

@MR_GPC94: Great appointment! Good luck Revs

@TSFCPodcast: REVS!!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@ReeceNuttall_: it’s so mad how i can’t shake my negative feelings to him all because he saved a penalty against us in 2016 when he had to go in goal because the MK keeper got sent off. someone give me something to cement my dislike because it’s so irrational

@katieee120: I hope I’ll be proven wrong but this does feel like a step backwards..

@sbfcchazo: Announce promotion

@hrgianninotti: We are so back guys

@GraysBoro19: Revs at the wheel 😎 please with that Scotty back too 😳😳

@drackers: My Gaffer!!!!

@jkanalysis7: Let’s see what Alex Revell can bring to the table at #StevenageFC. Most of their fans are happy which is always a good start, had a managerial spell with them in Feb 2020-Nov 2021 averaging 1.2P/G in LG2. I don’t think many managers can replace Steve Evans for the style of play & how effective it was. With limited funds too & bringing players from LG2 with him. Excited to see how Revell does, ex player & been around the club for a while now.

@Jordanc_996: No Revell back then #rufc

@rufc__cal: fuck sake

@borobloodyboro: REVELL AGAIN OLE OLE

@Jzsh_x: Revell again, revell again ole ole
