Hull City owner Acun Ilicali explains more on decision to sack Liam Rosenior

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali explains more on the surprise decision to sack head coach Liam Rosenior earlier this week.

The club’s decision to part ways with Rosenior came days after their failure to secure a spot in the Championship playoffs.

Following a defeat to Plymouth on the last day of the season, Hull found themselves in 7th place, just three points behind Norwich.

Rosenior, who had previously played 161 matches for the club, was named as head coach in November 2022 when Hull was in 22nd place in the Championship.

Under his leadership, the team transformed into strong contenders for the playoffs, but ultimately fell short at the end.

Despite this setback, the 39-year-old manager had been recognised for his achievements and was even nominated for the Championship manager of the season award.

He even signed a contract extension in December, highlighting the club’s confidence in his abilities. Yet somewhat have now decided not to go on with him into the 2024/25 season.

He told talkSPORT: ā€œI think he had been in charge of the team for two-and-a-half years now, two complete years. Our aim from the first minute was to progress and make a beautiful team for the beautiful fans.

ā€œOur focus is on how to make this team go to higher stages for the fans and how we can improve the team.

ā€œBut in football the most important thing is to be united in everything so success can come more and more. When you have a difference of thinking from the coaching side and the ownership, it is not good for the team to go for a long-term journey.

ā€œLiam is a fantastic coach and a fantastic person, but at the end of the day we have to do what is best for the club.

ā€œWe had to make a decision for the future of our club and unfortunately our decision is not to continue with Liam.”

On why he decided to part ways with Rosenior, IlicaliĀ continued: ā€œLiam has a way of football thinking and football philosophy that I completely respect, but the football I want to see in my team is not the style Liam was playing.

ā€œI think heā€™s successful, I think heā€™s okay, but there is a dream for me of the football club playing the style of football which does not match with his style. This is natural in football.

ā€œEvery country, you play a different style of football and there are so many different philosophies.

ā€œDo we want to play like this for the future, we didnā€™t want to play like this. Iā€™m an offensive style character and more attacking style in my own life and career.

ā€œIn football, what we like is an attacking style of football. Iā€™m not saying Liamā€™s style of football is bad, but it is not for us.

White pressed the owner on why the decision to give a new contract in December, Ilicali said: ā€œThe separation started after January. After January, we made the best recruitment in the league, we brought in offensive players. The football mind of the team is making the recruitment an attacking style. Carvalho, Abdulkadir Omur from Turkey. Even our left-back is the most attacking left-back in the team.

ā€œYou have to find a coach that matches the recruitment. Before January we were on the same page as Liam. After thatā€¦

ā€œI want to jump on my seat watching the team. I want the crowd to get more and more excited.

ā€œI respect his play, but I want to jump on my seat.

ā€œTo summarise, I think Liam is a very good coach with a certain football philosophy, but we want a very good coach with an attacking style of mentality. That is why we went different ways.ā€

The name of former Hamburg coach Tim Walter was put to Ilicali and he said no decision has been made.

He added: “There are some managers we are thinking about. I cannot put one name in front. I have to thank Liam for putting us in a good position and we are attractive for many managers.

“We will have many options. We are not in a big rush, but we will find a solution as soon as possible.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Hull City owner Acun Ilicali explains more on the decision to sack Liam Rosenior…

@dazzar86: Acun basically said: Liam, I bought you a Ferrari and you drove it like a pensioner. #hcafc

@hcafcopinions: Canā€™t argue with Acunā€™s issue with the style of play. Constantly played as if trying to hold on to a 1-0 lead, even if it was 0-0 or losing 1-0. Home performances were catastrophic and the manager could never admit it. #hcafc

@ScottGleftfoot: Acun told talksport the style of play was the reason he got sacked, this wouldnā€™t of happened if we had gone up, i get owners, gaffers, players only tell the public 40/50% what goes on behind the scenes. Clearly more to this #hcafc

@OiDontThen: Whether you agree with the decision or not, massive respect to Acun for getting out onto talksport so fast to give some context and transparency to the fans #hcafc

@jawsofdeathdjn: Its okay Acun saying now that he wanted a more entertaining attacking style of play. Did he actually say that to Liam ? I doubt it because we played the same way all season. Only the last few home games did we see more attacking intent. I think Acun just wants a ‘name’. #hcafc.

@John57201414: Let’s not forget, it was acun who brought the feel good factor back to city, not rosenior, let’s trust him and move on, UTT #hcafc

@StormTroop_Aim: Was a bit of both. The football under shota was turgid towards the end

@jhampson00: Itā€™s funny a lot of people that are unhappy with the Rosenior sacking are also the same ones that were calling for him to be sacked in march when we had that run of draws and losses šŸ¤Æ #hcafc

@Nicks648: Credit where credit is due he is facing the fans.

@Carlwilks2011: After hearing Acun Ilicali reasons for sacking Liam Rosenior. I have to agree that the football style could very slow at times. This was amplified by our dreadful performance against Plymouth away. When it is a must win game, passing around the back, and negative I think Acun may have said something like you need to change your style of football to Liam. Which Liam would dismissed straight away, all those attacking players in January should have smashed the playoffs. But he didn’t use him to their full attacking potential, did he?

@89_WYWhite: Fair comments from him really. Itā€™s a fine balance though and he will have to take the blame if it doesnā€™t work.

@ehinch1: To anyone who is calling for Acun, heā€™s come out today and said the truth. He couldā€™ve just hid away and said nothing but he came out and has given us fans answers!! #hcafc

@Hullensian90: Strongly believe the fans who are still angry at Acun are the ones who are choosing to turn the blind eye to Roseniors flaws. It’s a deeper connection for them which is fucking weird to begin with. You support the club not one bloke and his nan. We move on #hcafc

@dannyhird04: Fair play to Acun for actually coming out and explaining on national radio the decision, even if I’m not quite on board with everything that he’s said, or the decision yet, at least he is still fronting up to the media which some owners wouldn’t be seen dead doing #hcafc
