Young Boys fans throw objects at Aston Villa players and clash with police

Young Boys fans throw a number of objects at Aston Villa players and clash with police during Thursday’s Europa League fixture.

In Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Young Boys, Villa’s Donyell Malen scored twice but was hit on the head by a cup thrown from the Young Boys away section, which left him bleeding.

Malen had celebrated both goals in front of the visiting fans, troubling scenes caused the match was halted for over five minutes as Young Boys captain Loris Benito told fans to calm down. There were further clashes occurred with police, requiring riot gear in the second half.

Young Boys boss Gerardo Seoane apologised for the incident but said that his clubโ€™s fans were provoked by Malenโ€™s celebrations.

Young Boys have a recent history of crowd trouble, having faced multiple UEFA fines and a partial stadium closure in the past year for similar incidents involving thrown objects and pyrotechnics.

โ€œItโ€™s normal when you score, you want to be with your teammates,โ€ Young Boys manager Seoane said in his post-match press conference. โ€œMaybe it was a small provocation [by Malen], I donโ€™t know. Maybe our fans took it this way. But our fans should not react so heavily.

โ€œThe referee asked our captain to go with the supporters, and he was going there to calm [them down] a bit. Some supporters came down to have a talk, and some police reacted like they were going to jump on the pitch, but this was not the intention.

โ€œItโ€™s a pity [to go] from the provocation to thinking they would jump on the pitch. And the result is not nice for anybody. We apologise, I donโ€™t feel good. Itโ€™s not how we want to act when we are guests somewhere, and I think nobody wins and I think everybody loses from this situation.โ€

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery said that Malen was โ€œOKโ€ and added: โ€œWe need respect for both sides. It is not necessary to get a moment like we had today. Respect for both sides.โ€

Donyell Malen scored twice in a first half dominated by Villa, both goals then led to objects being thrown on to the pitch from the away end with Malen struck by a plastic cup.

Young Boys also had a goal disallowed in the second half after a long VAR check. Joel Monteiro made it a nervy finish with his goal in the 90th minute goal, but Villa held on for what is their seventh victory in a row at home.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery:ย “The team was very focused in the match. My first analysis after the match is that we were consistent but when we were winning 2-0 we did not use our opportunities to score a third.

“We know we need the goal advantage to be in the top eight in the Europa League. We relaxed a little bit in the second half.

“A team like Young Boys with experienced players and experienced in Europe they could score one goal like they did and then you can get in troubles. We must be learning in our process and the way we are to try to avoid the moment in the future like we had today.

“We have to try to get the balance, how we are managing the competitions and how we manage the match.

“Today we did the analysis this morning and tried to get our gameplan like we did, the first moment of the players was very good but we must be more demanding in some moments, we were relaxing maybe a little bit.

“Today we did one step forward overall.”

On Donyell Malen after he was hit by a plastic cup:ย “I think he is OK.”

On his performance:ย “One month ago he demanded that I changed him because he was tired. Progressively he has been getting fit. He is getting numbers which is fantastic. He is really performing well. Now, keep going.”
