Yeovil boss Mark Cooper slams National League’s decision to award Weymouth three points

Yeovil Town boss Mark Cooper slams the National League’s decision to award Weymouth three points after the Easter Monday abandonment.

He gave his views on it when interviewed on BBC Somerset after his side won 3-1 at home to Dartford on Saturday afternoon.

As per Gloverscast, the Football Association cleared Yeovil of any wrongdoing after the Weymouth game was abandoned in the 75th minute due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Both teams were taken off the pitch after an incident in the stands, with an air ambulance soon arriving and landing within the stadium.

Weymouth posted a photo of her visiting the ground on the 4ht of April as she recovered: “A special guest today, Hayley Singleton sadly fell unwell at our game on Monday, leading to an air ambulance having to be called. Today she joined us with her husband, Scott, and their son to thank everyone involved for the care she received at the match against @YTFC She is recovering well and hopes to be back to watching football from the stands soon.”

At the time, Weymouth had been 1-0 up, but the National League seemingly waited until Yeovil were crowned National League South champions, before making a decision to not replay the fixture.

After being asked about if his side ending the season on 95 points should they get a win against relegated Dover, he said: “It would be 98 points if I had my way! But the National League has made a horrendous decision.

“We want to go out with as many as we can get.

“We 100% wanted to play the game again, we would have taken the staff to play it if we had too.

“We are cleared by the FA of any wrongdoing, but we are still deemed to be at fault that the game got called off.

“They are basically saying we got the lady ill, made the air ambulance land on the pitch, and it was our fault there was no time resolution as to when we were going to start again.

“I don’t know where the fault is, but it just shows the National League for what they are this season.

“It has been a complete shambles.“

Twitter users reacted as Yeovil boss Mark Cooper slams the National League’s decision to award Weymouth three points…

@theflyingyorky: Sensible decision, nothing to play for & results won’t affect any other club.

@stuarthughes747: The precedent set is challengeable

@freddyharperdav: Conveniently announced the day after Yeovil clinched the title…..

@HantsPilgrim: The National League span the wheel again and this time it landed on “the score at the time is the result”.

@James_Turnerr20: I know this is slightly different, with the game being stopped for a medical emergency which is horrible, but why has this game + the Slough vs Bath game had the result upheld whilst games like Scunthorpe vs Buxton and Chorley vs Spenny haven’t? Just to be clear, not criticising this decision as it’s sensible and the initial postponement is obviously sad. It just doesn’t make sense how in the laws of the game they’re all seen as abandonment/postponements but they get treated differently?

@The1RossPowell: You really are the most pathetic, two bob, tinpot organisation. You’ve literally waited a few hours until after Yeovil gave you the opportunity to do what you do best – take the coward’s way out.

@Lancsiron: The non replaying of these games in the @TheVanaramaNL is surely only because things have been decided. Had Yeovil not been crown champions last night or before the final game of the season the. I suspect his game would he been replayed

@coxyoioi: Sensible decision although it would’ve been fun to have seen #ytfc players given a guard of honour had it been replayed. 🏆

@MikeH88: Wait till the decision effectively means nothing then announce. Keep your points with the *. We’ll enjoy promotion. But can’t help think this is a bad precedent to set. A tight game with 15 mins to play. The Bath game had mitigating circumstances. This isn’t the same. #YTFC

@joebailey1985: Ha ha, as expected – last night’s result was awaited before this was announced

@Kevinash817973: Who effing cares, the main point is the lady in question is ok and recovering, W*#*-@** who gives a sh1t, we are CHAMPIONS.

@Nick18T: Fair enough but there’s no chance this is the case if you still needed the points. 😂

@WilliamBiss: Weymouth* with the heavily asterisked W.

@clarkey_90: That’s fine. You’ll always have the little * next to your biggest day.

@michaelcook001: Doesn’t really matter now…. Yeovil are champs and Weymouth need the points

@stuarthughes747: A precedent set here and I’m sure other clubs including Yeovil if they needed points to secure a playoff position would be well within their rights of taking this to the law courts…..it was after all the referee who called off the game @Vanarama @FootballAssoc

@vivaganto: Right decision. Nothing to play for, promotion is achieved. Crack on.

@JOEWILLS13: As a result, I have got to put up something tragic happening through the fixture not being fully played which is a tragedy striking both clubs but not unexpected news though and it doesn’t matter as we’ve already won the league.

@JakePompeySmith: Probably a fair outcome & I’m sure Yeovil fans won’t care now that they’ve been promoted, however it begs the question… Why were Buxton not handed the victory when they were leading at Scunthorpe & that game got abandoned in INJURY TIME?! 😭
