Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield ‘aggrieved’ by controversial penalty awarded to Aston Villa

Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield says he has been left feeling ‘aggrieved’ by a controversial penalty awarded to Aston Villa.

With the scoreline at 1-0 Villa in the 84th minute, Jhon Duran was adjudged to have been brought down, with the referee John Busby pointing to the penalty spot.

Wycombe said in their match report: “Jhon Duran went to ground in the box as he bore down on Franco Ravizzoli and was awarded a penalty, which he converted himself.”

Matt Bloomfield however says it was “fairly obvious to me that it wasn’t a penalty.”

Take a look for yourself in the videos below…

Sky Sports interviewer: “Matt, you didn’t get the result, but there’s plenty to be proud of, I’m sure. So what are your main takes on the match?”

Matt: “Exactly, that pride at the performance. Pride at the way we conduct ourselves as a football club. The stands were full, the atmosphere was Incredible and the boys responded on the pitch. It’s a game of fine margins. The two boxes decided and unfortunately for us, we’ve just come up short tonight.”

Interviewer: “Yeah, you mentioned the fine margins and I’m going to get to the finishing of it. But first, one of the fine margins. How did you feel about the penalty? Did you have a chance to take a look?”

Matt: “Yeah, I’ve just seen it and I think social media is full of the… Listen, it’s unfortunate for us because had that not been given then we’d be taking penalties right now because we’d have finished 1-1.

“We had multiple opportunities. It’s fairly obvious to me that it wasn’t a penalty, but, you know, it’s just disappointing that that’s decided the night when we’ve played so well and deserve to take the tie even further.

“So obviously disappointment for us. That is the overriding feeling, but it’s pride at the performance and like I say, I think everyone’s in the decision back and it’s frustrating. ”

Matt said, per Bucks Free Press: Speaking on the incident, Bloomfield said: “It’s just frustrating as we had lots of good moments, a lot of good opportunities, yet ultimately, the goal that decided the game is disappointing.

“I’ve watched it back and I think social media is full of everyone’s opinions so I won’t go too deep into it.

“Overall, it is tough for the referees to make these decisions but we feel slightly aggrieved.

“I don’t think it’s right how managers speak about referees at times – I’ll give my opinion and I’ll speak to John [Busby, the referee] in the correct manner, but I feel any manager would feel aggrieved.

“If you look at it the other way, he’s been given a decision to make in that moment.

“It’s tough for referees.”

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to Sky Sports: “It’s always difficult to play against teams when they are playing at home with their supporters. They have the opportunity as well to try to show their capacity to fight against the teams in the Premier League.

“We were sometimes struggling as they were pushing in the second half, but I think we played the match, more or less, trying to get confidence, to get minutes. I’m happy because we finished with a lot of young players… and the most important thing is that we won.”

Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia speaking to Sky Sports on his goal against Wycombe after returning from injury: “It was good and what I need to be more often, [getting] in the box. Fortunately, the deflection came to me and I tried to head it as far as possible over the goalkeeper.

“It is a really special night. To come back and play for this club, I really love this football club so today to have the cup tie and to help the team with the goal is an amazing experience.

“We have a really big squad as we showed today. We have an amazing academy and today was a chance to show our quality.

“We try to play our game and keep going in our philosophy and we got the win.”
