Wrexham’s James McClean aims a dig back at Rotherham United fans after he had been receiving taunts during Saturday’s fixture.
McClean made his feelings known as he went down the tunnel at full time, and also took to Instagram, captioning it: “Rotherham fans stink of p*ss, came to the racecourse and got dismissed.”
This aligns with his well-documented history of hitting back at those who abuse him, with his provocative behaviour and social media jabs at opposing fans.
This wasn’t his first dig this season; earlier in January 2025, he called Shrewsbury a “cesspit full of inbreds” after a loss, and in September 2024, he labeled a Birmingham fan a “smelly fat gammon” after catching a thrown cup of Bovril.

Twitter users reacted as Wrexham’s James McClean aims a dig back at Rotherham fans after receiving taunts…
@JadeLWilliams86: This is the James McClean responding like that to being called a terrorist during the match even when he wasn’t on the pitch.
@UTM234: Fact he gets away with this is a disgrace @Wrexham_AFC. Would love to hear what Wrexham fans think about him painting your club in a dark light ! #rufc #WrexhamAFC
@gazzabelton: Absolute disgrace to the club in my opinion. He is meant to be club captain and comes out with this. Maybe he should work on his performances as he has been poor recently and get into the starting lineup
@Robbiefletch: Disgusting excuse of a human being #rufc
@mattygoodwin: You’d like to think Wrexham’s press officer is tearing their hair out and has already been in touch with him to take this down. Childish behaviour and painting their club in a bad light.
@Hoppyontour: Class that! Deserved after the vile songs, a small minority of our fan base sung about him.
@andrew_mchale1: To be fair, that’s quite funny #utm #rufc
@CraigGoater87: He would be first to moan if someone was having ago at him tho, agree with some of comments he’s club captain he can’t be saying things like this, surely club has to do something???
@KimmyQuickslice: He cries to the press about being abused and bullied by away fans but literally the guy doesn’t help himself 🤷🏻♀️
@PaytonKurt: Says something weird like that then turns his comments off so no one can hurt his feelings bless him
@JTWXMAFC: Absolute hero. And has every little Englishman in his pocket
@j42k_utm: turned comments off aswell what a twat
@Canadine08: Then cries and wants a special rule when someone says something to him 😬🎻
@DannyClarry: James McClean is a tosser isn’t he
@sxmrufc: Turns his comments off his post though the melon 😂😂😂
Wrexham moved level on points with second-placed Wycombe Wanderers in League One as they claimed a hard-fought victory with Sam Smith scoring just minutes into the second half to defeat Rotherham.
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said, per Leader Live:
“The Bolton game, you could feel it was coming because if you analyse the game, I thought it was as good as we’ve played at home for a long while but of course we hadn’t won.
“Fortunately we’ve been winning away but we needed to get back to winning ways at home and I thought the crowd played their part.
“They were absolutely brilliant to help us get over the line. It’s great at The SToK Cae Ras when you’ve got everybody singing behind the team.
“They sensed that it was a tough game, they knew what type of game it was going to be with Rotherham coming into town but a huge contribution from our supporters.”
On Sam Smith: “I thought his all-round display was outstanding.
“He held the ball up, he chased lost causes and he’s got the winning goal.
“It was a great header by Jay and a really coolly-taken goal from Sam.
“That was a big moment for us but goalscorers always want to get the first home goal.
“But I think the supporters have seen what he contributes, he is a tireless worker for the team.
“Sam and Jay gave us so much out of possession as well. Their work can sometimes go unnoticed but their intelligence of taking up positions and filling space for us protects the midfield and they’ve done brilliant for us again.
“It’s nice that they’ve combined to get the goal.”
“I don’t want to see them (Wrexham) fail,” said Rotherham boss Steve Evans.
“I think Phil Parkinson is a good guy and he can’t do any more than go and sign the boy [Sam] Smith, [Jay] Rodriguez and Ollie Rathbone from us.
“I would think their budget is way up there, £4m spent in the January window. That tells you the ambition that lies at Wrexham and it tells you a little bit about our challenge [on Saturday] too.”
“Our aim is to go and win at Wrexham,” he added.
“We know that it’s going to be tough. I described them in the same way as I did Birmingham at the start of the season – and now Wycombe have joined that little group in terms of having huge finances to try and play Championship football next season.
“But our sole objective has to be to win every game.”
