Major coup for 7th tier club after signing experienced former EFL captain

Major coup for 7th tier club Bromsgrove Sporting after signing experienced former EFL captain Jamille Matt from Walsall.

The 36 year old will join the Southern League Premier Division Central side upon the expiry of his contract with the Saddlers.

Walsall finished the League Two season sitting 13th with 65 points from 46 games played, and had been top for quarter of it before bottling it.

Bromsgrove, managed by Tim Flowers, finished 18th with 44 points from 42 games played, 5 points above the relegation zone.

A club statement read: Bromsgrove Sporting are delighted to announce the signing of striker Jamille Matt, from Walsall.

In what is a major coup for the club, the 36 year-old Jamaican joins following his recent departure from the League Two club, after a successful three-and-a-half years with the Saddlers.

Joining Walsall in January 2023, he went on to make 140 appearances, during which time he wore the captain’s armband and became a firm fans’ favourite.

Playing all of his football in the Football League since 2012, Jamille has also enjoyed fruitful spells with the likes of Forest Green Rovers, where he scored 19 goals in their League Two winning season of 2021/22, Newport County, where he played 76 games and reached the 2018/19 League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley, and Fleetwood Town where, as he did with Forest Green, played at the Third Tier of English Football in League One.

On joining Sporting, Jamille commented: β€œI’m happy to have signed for Bromsgrove for next season, and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

β€œWorking with Tim was a big part of my decision after working with him previously and I’m also looking forward to linking up with the lads too – some of whom I’ve played with previously.

β€œI can’t wait to get started!”

We hope you will join us in welcoming Jamille to Sporting!
