CLUB STATEMENT:
Huddersfield Town can confirm that Michael Duff has today been relieved of his duties as Head Coach.
The decision was made after Saturday’s Sky Bet League One defeat at Bristol Rovers; a result that saw the team fall out of the Play-Off positions.
Owner and Chairman Kevin Nagle commented:
“This is not a decision that I have taken lightly. I really like Michael as a person and I know how diligently he has worked for the Club since he was appointed as Head Coach in the summer, so we’ve all been desperate for him to succeed.
“However, our results on the pitch since the turn of the year have simply not been good enough. It is true that we’ve had an unprecedented injury situation to contend with, particularly recently, but I believe that the resources we have available are capable of more than the four wins we’ve registered in our last 15 games.
“I feel we must make this change now to reignite our challenge for promotion. I want to thank Michael, and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Academy Manager and Club legend Jon Worthington will take charge of the First Team for the rest of the 2024/25 season, starting with next weekend’s game against Crawley Town at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Huddersfield Town has today confirmed that Academy Manager Jon Worthington will fulfil the role of Interim Head Coach of the First Team for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
41-year-old Worthington begins the role with immediate effect and will be in the dugout at the John Smith’s Stadium for our next Sky Bet League One fixture with Crawley Town on Saturday 15 March, kicking off at 3pm.
Previously overseeing First Team matters on a caretaker basis between 29 January 2024 and 18 February 2024 in the Sky Bet Championship, Worthington’s side collected six points and scored nine times in those four games, which included a memorable 4-0 home win over Sheffield Wednesday.
A former Club captain, Worthington represented Town 195 times between 2002 and 2009, and was part of the side that secured promotion from Sky Bet League Two to Sky Bet League One via the Play-Offs.
Full details of Worthington’s assistant coaches will be shared in due course.
Huddersfield Town Interim Head Coach Jon Worthington commented:
“Huddersfield Town is my Club, and I’m honoured to be coaching the First Team between now and the end of the season.
“We have 10 important matches to come with plenty of points remaining to play for and every possibility still open to us. As it is each day, my full focus and energy will be spent doing whatever I possibly can to help our Club be the best version of itself.
“In that time, my goal is to repay the faith and trust that Kevin Nagle, Jake Edwards and Mark Cartwright have shown in me, and give Town supporters pride in their team and Club. See you all at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon.”
Twitter users reacted amid the favourites to become new Huddersfield manager with Michael Duff sacked and an interim named…
@NETerrier: Given there are no comments from Cartwright, I suspect that is being dealt with also.
@T_Rev_stevenson: Sorry to see MD go as he comes across as a likeable chap but agreed that this decision sadly had to be made. Best of luck to MD going forwards and I’m sure his next appointment will go better 👍
@joshuanuttman1: Cartwright has to follow, he sacked Warnock, appointed Moore. Then he appointed Breitenreiter. Now if we’ve sacked the 3rd appointment he made he has to go too.
@PrestonTerrier: Feel for Michael here. Thrown under the bus by everyone at the club.
@Stevros1988: Now please, for the love of God, send Cartwright on his way too. There’s no point sacking Duff if Cartwright is going to be the man to appoint the new manager and sign any new players in the summer.
@Hoppo101: You have got rid of a good manager Hudds. If it wasn’t this season he would have got you up next. Too many people think L1 is easy. Brum, running away, Wrexham very wealthy, Wycombe billionaire owner, turned down 7m fore their striker, not many at L1 can do that.
@NobleofLiam: Mad decision! Duff hasn’t had anywhere near the sort of team he wanted. How is Cartwright in a job then? Massive, massive mistake. Just remember Cartwright picked Moore for his ‘attacking football’ and he said that we were in a better position now than when we were last year.
@Htfckrakowski: Seemed like a good bloke and definitely feel for him with all the injuries but, it really hasn’t been good enough all season and since that Stockport game on New Year’s Day it’s been fucking dire. Had to go and Cartwright should be soon to follow
@Lambypie_: If Cartwright doesn’t go this is pointless. We cannot afford for Cartwright to have the decision of naming a new manager as he doesn’t know how to choose one. This is a fact. Duff was part of the problem, but not the entirety of it.
@Billo20Four7: Cartwright has to go now. He more culpable; from signings which have been catastrophic to head coaches where, if anything, we have become worse. From no limits in PL days to no identity in L1. On the latter, his judgement has been found wanting. How can he remain in post too?
@AlexNoctaris: Think we all really wanted to be celebrating promotion with him at the end of the season, but with the cards he was dealt by Cartwright’s destruction of the squad, we’ve ended up here instead. Not really sure what to make of it if Cartwright doesn’t go too.
@mark_s_turner: As many have already pointed out Mark Cartwright simply cannot remain in post. We must remove him too, and have him nowhere near our process for a new manager. Duff had to go in the end, but Cartwright should have gone at the end of last season, and has got the backing of no fans
@jfrance27: Don’t agree with this one. The constant churn of managers has proven over the years to be unsuccessful. Goes without saying but the next appointment is huge. Cartwright must be replaced as sporting director and a new football structure in place move forward.
@theheadfather: Means nothing if MC doesn’t follow him
