A worrying update has been given with an injured Elliot Embleton taken to hospital after being sent off at Hull City on Saturday.
The 23 year old was went off in an ambulance with what Tony Mowbray fears is a “bad injury” after being stretchered off in Sunderland’s 1-1 draw in the Championship.
Embleton was handed a red card deemed for a challenge on Ryan Woods midway through the second half, and was stretchered off after coming off the worst of the collision.

Mowbray revealed in the post-match interview that Embleton has been taken to A&E for treatment with medical staff feeling it was serious enough to be hospitalised.
The Sunderland head coach added that he felt the decision to send him off was rather harsh.
“Elliot has gone in an ambulance to hospital, he’s in a lot of discomfort,” Mowbray said, as per Hull Live.
“I don’t want to comment on what we think it is but our club doctor is here and he thought it was serious enough to go to hospital.
“He’s in a lot of pain and hopefully he will be looked after well – at this stage it looks like a bad injury.
“I’ve seen the incident back in super slow-mo and I think the referee will be disappointed when he sees it back, I think the ball is bouncing and they both jump. Elliot catches him with his knee, he does flick his foot but there’s no contact. It happens fast, and maybe the referee makes the decision having seen the reaction.
“Having studied it – I think the referee has in my opinion been a little bit rash in running over and giving the red card.”
Meanwhile on Danny Batth, he could face a spell out after sustaining an injury in the early stages of the Championship encounter.
Alex Pritchard also missed the game with a calf problem but the club are confident that is not serious.
“I’ve said before, it’s very, very rare that you have your whole squad fit and available,” Mowbray said.
“Danny felt his calf, we’re not sure if it’s a tear or not yet. He pushed off and felt a really sharp pain. We’ll have to wait and see what the diagnosis is.
“I’m pleased for Danny Ballard, it’s longer than we would have wanted him to play and I think it’s almost understandable that he’s made a bit of a tired lunge to give the penalty away. He probably should have only had 30 minutes today.
Ross Stewart managed to score on his return to action, coming off the bench to put 10-man Sunderland ahead before Ozan Tufan got one back to earn a point for the hosts.
“Yes,” Hull boss Liam Rosenior said, as per Yorkshire Post, on it being two points dropped. “It’s frustrating. Not in a negative way.”
“Sunderland are a good side, they’ve got one of the best records away from home and we’ve limited them to very little – I don’t remember Matty (Ingram) having to make a save all game.
“The most disappointing aspect is we talk about a lot about not conceding in transition but we switched off and when you give a player of Ross Stewart’s quality an opportuntiy, he’s going to take it.
“What I was delighted with was the response to come back into the game.
“Overall it’s two points dropped, mainly because we just played at a good level.
“Since I’ve come in we’ve lost one in five, we just need to turn those draws into wins.
“Maybe you might disagree but I see real signs of progress in terms of the performance levels of the group, the organisation – we look more solid, more difficult to beat.
“I have to give the players that stabilisation to make sure we can go on to get results.
“But I thought some of the football we played from the back was outstanding, we created chances.
“I was worried because when you play against a team who are going to sit back with 10 men, if you’re not switched on to transition, which we weren’t for the goal, you can open yourselves up.
“Sometimes when you’re so dominant and playing in their half, they can create a moment with just one long kick up the pitch, which they did.
“We bounced back again and scored a really good goal. I was just waiting for us to score the second.
“It didn’t happen but you can see I threw the kitchen sink at it. I’m trying to win games.”
Rosenior walked down the tunnel with Ward at half-time, reeling at not being awarded another penalty, for a potential foul on Estupinan, who put his spot kick wide in the 49th minute.
“I don’t want to be one of those managers that constantly speaks about referees,” he said. “I’ll keep what I said about Gavin private.
“Embleton’s gone for the challenge but I can understand why the ref’s given a red. He’s gone for the ball and I just really hope he gets better because it looks like a bad injury. I know Ryan Woods feels exactly the same way.”
Here’s how fans reacted as worrying update is given with injured Elliot Embleton taken to hospital after being sent off at Hull…
@F1DLG: @BeanGre73226284
@lord_barrold: Red card and I’m a SAFC fan
@fdr_clothing: Awful decision. Hull player leads with an elbow into Embleton’s face.
@LeeGAnderson010: Neither angles are a red…..if he cards embo for high challenge; does the other lad not get carded for leading with the arm (and no he isn’t just protecting himself)
@NeilPhilipThor1: The Hull player must have gone in with some force to move Embleton that far !!
@AndrewSutton13: Embarrassing by their lad
@_BarryDixon: That’s never a red. Hardly a yellow. Needs to be appealed
@__Gazz___: The lad elbows him while he’s in mid air then rolls around holding his chest.
@Michael71830696: From the first angle didn’t look like a red but the second angle most definitely a red
@nathangunn13: Looks like a broken ankle to me. The way it hangs as he’s falling looks horrible
@Ryan_Craig89: Not a red
@SRsafc2022: 100% red can’t be doin that in today’s soft game
@fenwick_stephen: Hull player looking at the player not the ball, leads with his elbow and knee. Embleton look at the ball. If anything Hull player should have seen red
@NeilStrid: “Here’s a 50-50 ball – I think I’ll jump in like a pansy and do a 180 degree pirouette and end up backwards!” – Welcome to football 2022 style…..
@colwright3: Pathetic decision. Not even a yellow.
@Dunky_K: Linesman didn’t even flag for a foul FFS.
@jonny8686: Literally boots him in the side studs up, it’s as clear a red card as you’ll get 😂
@DominicDorianGB: Never a red, red is a joke!
@KrisMonkeyDay: That’s a red? 😂😂.
@jontyg84: Watched it 20 times never a red.
@EddyGray19: If that’s a red I’ll support the fuckin skunks. What is it with shithead refs at the minute man?
@AL_SNR58: @EFL Can you please explain how that is a red card. You have a major problem with the standard of referees in the EFL do something about it
@James95Roper: Shite decision. Even so should of went in with his heed would of got the foul
