Wigan fan gets knocked out by Sheffield United supporter at train station

A Wigan Athletic fan gets knocked out by a Sheffield United supporter at the city’s train station on Friday afternoon.

The moment was captured on video, and initially it seems to start with some winding up, leading to pushing and shoving, then fists are thrown.

One strikes a man, who is seen falling to ground out cold, before some move out the way, a few try to continue fighting and one goes to attend the individual laid flat out.

The game itself saw promotion-chasing Sheffield United move 8 points clear of third-placed Luton after a 1-0 victory over Championship‘s bottom side Wigan Athletic.

The home team took an early lead after James McAtee broke away down the left and sent in a low centre for Iliman Ndiaye at the back.

Ben Amos made an impressive save from Billy Sharp, and Ndiaye was denied another goal by James McClean’s goal-line clearance as he Blades threatened to take down the Latics before the break.

Wigan’s performance after the break got better and Thelo Ahasgaard’s header drew Wes Foderingham to a comfortable stop, but they couldn’t find an equaliser. They are now eight points behind safety and have six games left.

Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom: “I know people might have been expecting us to roll Wigan over but they showed a lot of fight and energy.

“They worked for each other and they don’t seem fazed by the position they’re in.

“Iliman (Ndiaye) won us the game and he’s had some criticism off me in recent weeks.

“I felt he hasn’t been in the six-yard box enough or getting enough shots away.

“Keeping hold of the ball and taking players on comes naturally to him. Sprinting 40 yards to get a tap-in doesn’t so we’re delighted with his goal from our point of view.

“He’s growing up and playing with maturity. He’s carrying himself like he feels he belongs here.

“If teams around us drop points it’s a bonus but we don’t focus on results elsewhere.

“As long as we keep winning and making that margin of error even finer for them we don’t have to worry about anything else.”

Wigan’s Shaun Maloney: “Sheffield United put us under a lot of pressure in the first 10 minutes and we were disappointed to concede so early.

“After that, I was really happy.

“I thought we started to control the ball and we defended our box very well.

“We needed bits of luck at times but the players played through the pressure.

“United have some high profile players but I think we went toe to toe.

“Their talent took over at times and they created chances but we dealt with it. We knew they would have chances but we did come here thinking we could win.

“At this stage of the season it’s about how clinical you are and that’s our only disappointment.”

Social media users reacted as a Wigan fan gets knocked out by a Sheffield United supporter at a train station…

@Conorkingy: Hit from the side, coward

@DannyLannon: No idea who is who, but the lad in orange who got knocked out started all that by walking straight through them and slapping the lad… he did get blindsided from the side too but play silly games and all that…

@samf012321: ye da gets knocked out at sheff U away #wafc

@Jason Lee: christ me how pathetic is this, and for what?! get a grip of yourselves

@ForeverAYellow: I hope the fan is alright. Why isn’t the message getting through that just one punch can kill? How many more times are we going to see something take a blow to the head, a see more potential deaths. Over recent years we’ve sadly lost players as well as fans.

Yorkshire Police are trying to reduce violent crime with the Force raising awareness of how alcohol can lead to a fight and the loss of a life.

The ‘One Punch Can Kill’ campaign reminds people that in a split second a person can become a killer or be killed.

They said: “We want everyone to be able to enjoy the pubs and clubs in the towns and cities in West Yorkshire, but would encourage people to consider how much alcohol they consume.

“What can start out as a fun night drinking with friends can easily turn into a nightmare.

“Just one punch can ruin the lives of both the victim and the person who throws the punch.

“Yorkshire Police are committed to tackling violent crime and will continue our efforts to reduce the numbers of victims, but we need people to play their part by thinking about their actions before they get involved in a fight on a night out.”
