What the government’s announcement means for English football as regions discover lockdown fate

What tier is your team in? Regions discover much anticipated lockdown fate as the government reveals who is in what tier on Wednesday.

The health secretary says more of the east and south east of England will be put into Tier 4

In the south west, Mr Hancock says the “direction is clear and in many cases quite stark”.

He announces that from 00.01 on Boxing Day:

  • Sussex
  • Oxfordshire
  • Suffolk
  • Norfolk
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Parts of Essex currently not in Tier 4
  • Waverley in Surrey
  • Hampshire (apart from the New Forest)

Areas going into Tier 3 are:

  • Bristol
  • Gloucestershire
  • Somerset
  • Swindon
  • Isle of Wight
  • The New Forest
  • Northamptonshire
  • Cheshire
  • Warrington

And places to be moved into Tier 2 are Cornwall and Herefordshire.

Dr Jenny Harries, one of England’s deputy chief medical officers, said the tiers changes were about “encouraging and tightening our own behaviours” in areas where people “stray off course a little bit”.

If places need to be moved to a higher tier again, Mr Hancock said he would be “prepared to act incredible fast”.

“The current tiers are working,” he insisted. “We’ve all got to take responsibility for our own actions.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the creation of Tier 4 on Saturday – the toughest level of regional restrictions intended to clamp down on COVID-19 hotspots.

It came after a new coronavirus variant was credited with pushing infection numbers to record high levels.

Areas put into the highest band of measures were:

  • In southeast England: London, Kent, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey (excluding Waverley), Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings
  • In eastern England: Bedford, Central Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire and Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring).

What tier is your team in? Regions discover much anticipated lockdown fate as the government reveals who is in what tier on Thursday.

We already know that London have been moved into tier 3 as infections rise, causing fears from fans and leagues on Monday.

It was six weeks ago, Boris Johnson introduced a new tier system with stadiums in Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas welcoming back up to 4,000 fans after a nationwide lockdown.

However just as fans entered through the turnstiles at various grounds within London, there will be some who haven’t yet been to a match to continue their wait since March 2020.

There is expected to be some changes in tier for some areas, however it looks to be dismal news for many as we approach Christmas.

The COVID-19 tier review comes after a minister warns ‘don’t travel if you don’t need to’.

Priti Patel said the message from the government was for people to “have a smaller, more local and safer” Christmas if they can.

“Don’t travel if you don’t need to, don’t stay overnight somewhere else where you don’t need to, stay at home effectively, with your small support bubble,” the home secretary said.

“We want everyone to have a wonderful Christmas, we really do. But in a smaller, safer way, a localised way. I think the public understand that.”

When being press on whether people should travel to different parts of the UK over Christmas, the home secretary said the government would “urge people to exercise their judgement”, adding: “We would not advise people to travel – certainly from low tier to high tier or high tier into low tier. That would clearly put coronavirus at risk in terms of spreading the virus.”

Matt Hancock says that people “must be vigilant and keep this virus under control” – with 18,038 people in hospital with coronavirus across the country.

“We’ve come so far, we mustn’t blow it now.”

Mr Hancock says the rules are being relaxed for five days over the festive period because “Christmas is a very special time of year”.

He urges anyone seeing other family members to take “personal responsibility” for their actions and “see their loved ones in a way that is safe and careful”.

“This is a massive team effort,” he adds.

Here’s a great video of when Charlton fans were allowed back in the stands at The Valley, this is what fans in tier 1 and 2 areas can expect when returning through the turnstiles.

What was more bizarre was that there was Addicks fans LEAVING before full time in their first game back since March.

talkSPORT pundits slammed one individual for doing just that. You can see more HERE.

Parts of Essex and Hertfordshire are also reported to be entering tier three with Hancock confirming London, south and west Essex (Basildon, Brentwood, Harlow, Epping Forest, Castle Point, Rochford, Maldon, Braintree, Chelmsford, Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea) and the south of Hertfordshire (Three Rivers, Watford, Hertsmere and Broxbourne) .

The tier three restrictions would see pubs and restaurants closed except for takeaway and delivery services.

MPs. who have been notified on the plans by Hancock, said a sharp rise in cases meant the health secretary was unable to wait until the next scheduled review of England’s three-tier system on Wednesday.

One MP said they were told that cases are doubling every seven days in the capital whilst cases in south Wales, London and parts of the East and south-east of England are on a sharp rise.

They added that the next review of the tier system would be on the 23rd of December.

Jeremy Hunt asked Matt Hancock whether it’s against the rules for shoppers to travel into London and no doubt the other high risk areas to do their Christmas shopping?

Hancock replied: “It is recommended that people should minimise travel unless it’s necessary in a tier three area.

“And [they] should minimise travel where it’s necessary to a tier three area.”

It follows warnings from London Mayor Sadiq Khan that tier three restrictions could have a “catastrophic consequence” for hospitality, culture and some retail.
