Weymouth leaves fans stunned by signing experienced former EFL and SPFL player

In the last few days, Weymouth have confirmed that they have signed a well known experienced former English Football League and Scottish Professional Football League player.

That man is 31 year old Lionel Ainsworth who has made the surprise move to drop down two divisions to join the newly promoted National League South side.

Weymouth revealed the news of their latest signing on their website, they wrote: “Weymouth Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Lionel Ainsworth.

“Lionel brings a wealth of Football League experience and will add to the club’s attacking options. Lionel is available for today’s matchday squad vs Tonbridge Angels.

“Lionel is a former England Youth International and has played in the Championship during spells at Derby and Watford, as well as in the Football League with Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.

“In recent seasons Lionel played in the Scottish Premiership for Motherwell between 2013-2017, before joining Plymouth Argyle for two seasons.

“Welcome to the Terras Lionel!”

Since then, he has made his debut for the club as a second-half substitute in a 1–1 draw at Tonbridge Angels on 31 August.
