West Ham fuming claiming they’ve been robbed after goal overturned by VAR at Chelsea

West Ham United have been left fuming claiming they’ve been robbed after a goal is overturned by VAR at Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

The Hammers were 1-0 up after Michail Antonio’s goal in the 63rd minute, only for Thomas Tuchel’s side to find an equaliser and turned the game around after goals from Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz made it 2-1 in the 88th minute.

As the clock went past the 90th minute, West Ham thought they had found an equaliser after a Maxwell Cornet scored. However, after a lengthy VAR checked, the goal was controversially chalked off, proving to be one of the most controversial moments in recent Premier League history.

West Ham man Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have fouled Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy prior to Cornet’s finish, but the replay seems to show Mendy diving at Bowen’s feet, rather than the England international making contact with the Senegalese international.

Michael Owen also claimed the decision to over turn the goal was wrong. He tweeted: “The decision to rule out that West Ham goal is an absolute shocker. The GK dives at his feet, what’s he meant to do?”

Danny Murphy (Match of the Day pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live): “I don’t think I have any words that I can say out loud [about the decision to rule out West Ham’s equaliser]. It was a ridiculous decision – I can’t find any logic in it.

“Again, another poor decision and it wasn’t the only one today, unfortunately.

“It’s going to be a theme on Match of the Day tonight. [Fellow MOTD pundit Alan Shearer shouts “rubbish” in the background]

“The disappointment for David Moyes will be huge. To lose out on a decision like that – ridiculous is the only word you could use.”

Glenn Murray: Those are the decisions that make managers go grey. I feel as though Edouard Mendy has bought that from the referee. Jarrod Bowen catches Mendy ever so slightly, I think he realises he’s palmed it straight to a West Ham player and has stayed down.

POST MATCH REACTION:

West Ham boss David Moyes, on Maxwel Cornet’s disallowed goal: “You have seen it, it is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees – it doesn’t say much about whoever sent him over from VAR as well – it is an unbelievable decision against us.

“We feel we got back to 2-2 and it was not down to anything we have done. I support a lot of the VAR stuff, I actually think the goalkeeper dives, he is faking an injury because he cannot get to the next one – he did the same on the first goal as well. The referee somehow gets that so wrong it is incredible.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel: “It is super tough to score against West Ham, they defend deep and with bodies – the game became more complicated with the goal we gave away.

“It was a huge effort to come back and huge credit to the team, the impact from the bench – full credit to everybody.

“It was a clear foul on the goalkeeper, I had doubts about the first one – but I will not comment, last time I got punished with huge fines. You give your opinion, you will not be fined.

“It was not easy to keep the belief, it is hard to attack fluid and create chances against West Ham, nobody plays an open, spectacular match against them.

“We take it now step by step, we will try to use this momentum – things are clear now, we can demand full commitment to everything. We are in the middle of creating this and it is not finished.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to Match of the Day: “We were lucky today to get the VAR decision in our favour, which was for me the correct decision. We want to turn the game around and keep the three points.

“They do this to every team, it is so hard to create spaces, to create chances. They defend deep and with bodies and physicality. It is hard to find a consistent rhythm, then you go 1-0 down it is almost impossible – to keep believing was very important.

“To get the opener from the bench from Chilly and then from Kai was important because we want spirit. If we have a strong bench we have a higher chance to win.

“You need be tough, I know they can do it. It is also down to the situation, the transfer window is closed, everyone knows he is in the group. We need to improve consistency and this is not over.”

Twitter users gave their thought with West Ham fuming claiming they’ve been robbed after the goal was overturned by VAR at Chelsea…

@Tomekk_9: Where was this energy when for the Tottenham referee disaster? Absolutely deserved decision for Chelsea

@werby_whu: What a sad attitude that is should we just continue to give every decision incorrectly then by your logic?

@LeederJordan: It’s nowhere near a foul 😂😂😂 unbelievable

@TristanHBE: This is one of the most ridiculous decisions I’ve ever seen in football.

@goatersmotors: Can’t stand Chelsea myself, but Bowen does catch him.

@leeclarke27: Is it a non contact sport now, didn’t realise every time you touch someone it’s a foul

@BradleyIainHal1: Terrible. #VAR and the @RefsAssociation have lots to answer for this weekend and in the @NUFC game. We need an independent referee council which can assess and penalise bad performance. Week in week out they get away with it @maxrushden

@danwoff98: West Ham have been robbed. Simple as that.

@CraigDawson15_: We’ve been fucking robbed. Top 6 bias at it again. Fuck off

@whucentre: I’m not joking by the way, Moyes and rice need to go back, watch the disallowed goal, and then call for an investigation in their interviews, we’ve been absolutely robbed

@jackie_connell: a west ham fan for 54 years in which i loved every second of been a west ham fan, but today is the day i want to walk away from the game i loved all my life. VAR and refs are killing this great game.

@TheGrandDam: I can’t lie, I should feel bad for West Ham but unfortunately, I am shameless. Save your tears for another day. VAR working in Chelsea’s favour is rare. This is a sign from god above. I will take the win and the three points. We move bombastically.

@BradleyMarable: The league should allow the conversation to be heard as it happens so we understand how they got it so wrong. Referees should also be held accountable for bad decisions and fined like managers are when they rightly complain! Absolutely disgusting, worst refs in the best league

@NICO_WHUFC: The fact that he even went to the screen is shambolic

@Lystenman: And VAR official cherry picks what to show for on field review, so it never looks to be full/proper context.

@fyithetruth: When Arsenal point out the abject corrupt decisions against it almost in every match we play. Most on here laugh it off; dismissing it as oh it’s only Arsenal… Well the game we all love is about the reap what we sow. There needs to be an investigation into the PGMOL & it’s refs

@_Grimwood99: Rightfully so how can anyone being PAID to officiate see a replay of that and call it a foul??

@tomcoyi92: We get cheated time and time again, are we too honest? Seems being truthful in football gets you absolutely nowhere!

@revan_himself: The Prem should do what La liga do where there’s a camera in the var room and you can hear them talking to the ref

@JamieJo30710861: They won’t do that because it will spoil their ring of corruption
