CLUB STATEMENT:
“We are delighted to announce that George Cooper has signed for West.
“The 27 year old midfielder came through the Crewe Alexandra academy, making his first-team debut at the age of 17.
“He made 122 appearances in 4 years for The Railwaymen before joining Peterborough United in 2018. He stayed at Peterborough for 2 years before moving to Plymouth Argyle and then Chesterfield.
“George played for Preston Lions in Melbourne last season.
Manager Paul Marshall said this a massive signing for the club, telling the club, “George is a player who has turned down offers to play in the Conference North to join us at West.
“He is a fantastic player and one we are fortunate to have with us.
“I’ve had some good conversations with him and believe we can help George get back enjoying his football.
He has played over 200 football league games and is still only 27, so he has a lot more to give.
“I’ve no doubt he will be one to watch this season and we are excited to see the impact he will have on our team and season”
Welcome to West, George! 🤍🖤
Cooper graduated through the Crewe Alexandra Academy and secured a three-year professional contract in April 2014.
At the age of 17, he made his debut for Crewe Alexandra on the 2nd of September 2014 with his first league appearance came on the 26th of September 2014.
Cooper scored his first goal for Crewe in a 2-1 victory over Coventry City on the 11th of October 2014.
In April 2017, Crewe exercised a contract extension option, ensuring Cooper’s stay at the club until June 2018.
In January 2018, he transferred to Peterborough United on a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 win against Oldham Athletic.
Cooper joined Plymouth Argyle on a season-long loan deal on 29 August 2019, playing primarily as a left wing-back and providing 12 assists as Argyle earned promotion to League One.
After returning to the Posh, he was placed on the transfer list and excluded from the ‘Salary Cap Squad’, alongside George Boyd, Jason Naismith, and Louis Reed.
Cooper permanently signed for Argyle in September 2020, signing a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
In the last few years, he’s made appearances for Warrington Rylands in the Northern Premier League Premier Division and Australian club Preston Lions in the National Premier Leagues Victoria 2.
This is how fans reacted as West Didsbury & Chorlton sign the ex-Crewe, Peterborough, Plymouth, Chesterfield player…
@mxcatt: How the fuck have we signed George Cooper?!
@GarlicSowse: That’s a huge signing for that level. Guy was mint at Crewe a few years ago 😳
@aitchyrobinson: Remarkable. Was our best player in League Two when he was 20/21, sold for decent money to Posh but injuries and apparently a love of nightlife have held him back a bit. Classy left footer, great at crossing and set pieces.
@Tants_88: I was wondering where he would play next and whilst a bit surprised to see that level, hope he starts enjoying his football again!!
@bowie_kieran: Unbelievable signing, up the west ⚫️⚪️
@pieman80: I remember when #stfc was linked to the geezer – was told at time to good for us
Matt Baker: What on earth happened to him!!! Liked the sessions to much. So much promise and talent wasted.
Glyn McCallum: WTAF, no offence to WD&C AFC but he’s a League 1 player, obviously off field activities have somewhat blighted his career
Barry Johns: Good luck George. Once a green always a green 💚
Jason Lee: wishing him all the best, nice to see him not give up on his career after injury set backs and dropping down to non league, sometimes the best place to reignite your career again, still time too at age 27
