Steve Cooper shoulder barges his way through police officer to celebrate Nottingham Forest getting a huge win away to Fulham on Tuesday.
Philip Zinckernagel got the only goal of the game to stop the Cottagers from clinching the Championship title as well as boosting the Reds’ chances of going up automatically with them.
Marco Silva’s side, who sealed promotion on the 19th of April, had to better the result of second-placed Bournemouth to make sure of finishing top.
Instead it was Forest who ended up celebrating a win that moved them up to third and within three points of the Cherries, who host them on Tuesday the 3rd of May, in what should be one of the most tense matches of the second tier season so far.
It was all Fulham when it came to possession and produced 20 shots in the game, yet all of them failed to go in the back of the net.
Jack Colback testing Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak with an early long-range effort, and then Fulham replied with a Harry Wilson shot that hit Djed Spence and went wide.
Tim Ream saw backheel attempt go off target from a corner and then it was the turn of Aleksandar Mitrovic to have his first chance – a downward header put wide from five yards.
Brennan Johnson, who was being watched by Brentford manager Thomas Frank and won Championship’s young player of the year on Sunday, sent his effort across goal and wide for Forest.
News filtered in throughout Craven Cottage that Bournemouth were 2-0 down at Swansea with only 12 minutes played, the noise increased from supporters, and three minutes later, Forest was celebrating Zinckernagel’s opener. The 27 year old Danish forward lunged at the ball to divert it into the net.
Mitrovic, who is just two goals short of breaking Guy Whittingham’s post-war second-tier record of 42 goals in a season, headed off target twice before the break.
In the second half, he again failed to score, this time with a nodded effort, with a crucial touch from Samba on the cross from Neco Williams enough to put the Serbia international off.
A number of saves at either end kept the scoreline at 1-0, with Forest putting Fulham’s champagne on ice with a result that really making the race for promotion an interesting one.
Fulham’s Marco Silva: “It wasn’t a good game to watch. The players wanted to get the job done tonight but we didn’t perform at our best level at all. But the pressure of completion is the best pressure to have. We have to learn from this. At certain moments we didn’t do the basics. We had to control the game in our way and in the first half we didn’t do that.”
“The goal was strange. It was a clear foul, the player jumped on Neco [Williams]. I saw it and the fourth official has to see it as well. It was our fault the goal we conceded, but it was a foul on Neco.”
“Heart and soul as much as anything”

Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper: “It’s a brilliant win in the toughest game of the season – I’m sure Fulham will be champions. We attacked the game from the start and forced them into a mistake. Fulham had more of the ball, which is not what I normally like but I will accept it as we made as many chances as they did. It was a case of doing everything right in terms of defending. We showed heart and soul with blocks to keep the ball out of our net.
“Swansea on Saturday is the only thing on our minds. We have to recover and look at what we can improve on. It has been our approach up to now and there is no need to change.”
