A viral video resurfaces of Roy Keane left ‘fuming’ after losing a table quiz to Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in his Man Utd days.
We all know Roy Keane had a ‘win at all costs’ mentality during his playing days, something which held him to the top of the game, and was the leader of a dominant Manchester United side during the 1990s and early 2000s.
He carried that into his managerial career, though it has been said that his sky high expectations ultimately held him back in dealing with players less talented than himself.
So it’s no surprise that Keane was literally competitive about everything with no better proof than this video doing the rounds again.
The footage is from a documentary called Manchester United: Beyond the Promised Land, which followed the club’s progress in the 1999/00 season, the campaign after their historic treble.
In the clip, Alex Ferguson put together a table quiz for players and members of staff. However, Keane got the hump when losing, claiming the quiz was fixed. He eventually stood up, and left the room in disgust.
Keane says: “John, were you asked to change the questions about two minutes ago yeah?
“I think you were, weren’t you? You were asked to change all the questions. You were…
“You fixed it man, you know you have. Cheaters!”
It’s well known that Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson had a very fractious relationship, with the Irishman spending 12 years at Manchester United, winning 17 major titles before being abruptly released in 2006.
Speaking to the Off The Ball Podcast, Keane recounts how Chief Executive David Gill and Ferguson had unceremoniously told him in a meeting that he was going to be leaving the club, while also forgetting how long he had been playing at Manchester United for.
He said sarcastically: “As much as I’m not one to hold a grudge, I wouldn’t forgive Ferguson.
“The media spin, how I apparently upset everybody, it was all nonsense.
“I don’t care if it’s Alex Ferguson or the Pope, you’re going to defend yourself.
“I think when he apologises I will probably say hello to him, yeah. But I’ve no interest in speaking to the man.”
Keane also downplayed Fergie’s coaching methods and claimed that he was not the manager everyone thought him to be.
“People talk about Ferguson’s man-management. Don’t be kidded by all that.
“I was at the club when Bryan Robson left, when Steve Bruce left, two brilliant servants for Manchester United, and I didn’t like the way they were treated.
“People said Ferguson always had the best interests of Manchester United at heart. Darren Ferguson won a medal. He was very lucky.
“His brother was the chief scout for Manchester United for a long time. I’m surprised his wife wasn’t involved in the staff somewhere.”
Sir Alex Ferguson previously accused his former Manchester United captain Roy Keane of having a “savage tongue”.
Keane had his contract at Old Trafford cancelled soon after and Ferguson has admitted that the argument that preceded his departure was “frightening”.
“The hardest part of Roy’s body is his tongue. He has the most savage tongue you can imagine. He can debilitate the most confident person in the world in seconds with that tongue,” Ferguson wrote in his new autobiography.
“What I noticed about him that day as I was arguing with him was that his eyes started to narrow, almost to wee black beads. It was frightening to watch. And I’m from Glasgow.”
Alex Ferguson also spoke about the moment he knew Roy Keane was finished at Man Utd.
In his autobiography, Alex Ferguson: My Biography, the former United boss revealed it wasn’t until an Old Firm game for Celtic that he realised Keane was done.
“I think the [United] dressing room relaxed when Roy left. Relief swept the room. They no longer had to listen to the barrage that some of them had grown to expect,” Fergie wrote of his former captain.
“Because he’d been a declining force, the gap he left was not as big as it would have been three years previously.
“I watched him in a Celtic v Rangers game and said to Carlos [Queiroz] beforehand, ‘He’ll be the star man today.'”
“Roy was never in the game. He played a passive role,” Fergie continued, “The dynamic, fist-clenching, demanding Roy Keane wasn’t there.
“He loved it at Celtic Park. I spoke to him about it and he praised the training, the facilities, the Prozone.
“Things did settle down between us. About two months later I was sitting in my office discussing team business with Carlos, when a member of staff called to say that Roy was here to see me.
“I was startled.
“‘I just want to apologise to you for my behaviour,’ he said. That’s when we began describing the scene at Celtic and telling me how well his work was going.
“But when I saw him in that Rangers-Celtic game I knew he wouldn’t carry on with it.”

@hoaredavid: This is what made him the legend he is….wanting to win at everything he does and won’t settle for second best. Exactly what we are missing now
@pete689908: Bet he’s never even let his kids win at anything. Born winner
@liamjpn: You can tell Beck’s and all them lot were wary incase old Keano kicked off around them. How the guy don’t have some sort of fly on the wall TV show is beyond me 👀😂 you could just call it “Keano’s reaction to things” would be comedy gold. Hated him growing up but what a player!
@TruckyRucky1968: Born winner in my book, doesn’t like coming 2nd at anything!!
@Vizard_IO: This looks like a ruse by Fergie precisely meant to to rile up the players. He’s probably cheating there and Roy is onto it. Ferguson isn’t trying to hide it either. 🤣
@Mcsorley1S: And that’s why the guy was a great captain and player for this club, everyone was against him and his team, made him try, try and try over and over again.
@LiamLum1994: Winning mentality gone to a whole new level 😂
@MickyOwen90: Haha superb, love that. Competitive mentality through his veins.
@Markbrentnall08: Winning mentality! Competitor, hates to lose. Wish we had more players with his drive. One of the best captains united ever had. Players today are weak as fuck!
@TheGoonerAFC: Nah this is a season from The Office
@liampeo: Fuming 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
