Paul Merson slams Mikel Arteta and suggests which Premier League boss Arsenal should’ve been named as a replacement to Unai Emery.
When speaking in the Daily Star, he said that Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder should have been considered for the role at the Gunners instead.
Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Mikel Arteta taking on the Arsenal job is like Conor McGregor trying to fight Floyd Mayweather. It’s one of the biggest jobs in football and you’re giving it to someone who has never managed in his life!” Merson told the Daily Star.
“Mikel is a lovely bloke and I’m sure he’s a very good coach. For him it’s a job you just can’t turn down. But good coaches don’t always make good managers. You see it time and time again. And he has no experience at all.
“If the Arsenal board think they are suddenly going to start playing like Manchester City just because Arteta has worked with Pep Guardiola for a bit, they need to wake up and smell the coffee.”

He added: “I find it really tasteless the way they’ve gone behind City’s back to get this done. And they got caught so they’re washing all their dirty linen in public. That’s not Arsenal. That’s not Arsenal values.
“And why is Arteta talking to them behind City’s back anyway? He should have said: ‘Talk to my club first’. He’s not showing great loyalty, is he?
“Look at Chris Wilder and the job he’s done at Sheffield United. How has he not even been mentioned? He’s done everything right, been through the leagues and been hugely successful.
“Worked his way up. Coped in difficult situations. Gained years of experience. Doesn’t even get a look-in. I’m not saying he should have got the job instead but to not even be considered?”
Merson also spoke on Sky Sports about how he’s been left unconvinced by the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti at Everton.
He said: “If you look at the teams he’s managed, your Chelsea’s, you’re Bayern Munich’s, your Milan’s, now you’re coming in here, and you start, you know when they go out and buy someone, they’re looking down bottom half of the table.
“You know be looking at players at Southampton, Watford, people like that. He ain’t going to be able to bring in world class players.
“This bloke has been winning trophies, I mean I don’t get it. And that’s me, this is one of them, big wages I’ll take that. I don’t see it working.”
Jeff Stelling asked Tommo about whether Everton might have brought in Carlo Ancelotti to rival the big name manager Liverpool have in Jurgen Klopp. You can watch that clip below…

Both Arsenal and Everton played this afternoon, and it’s clear both sides have work to do, with there being no shots on target for both sides in the first half. The Gunners changed that to two for the second half, the Toffees remained at zero and neither could place the ball in the back of the net.
Fair to say it was an incredibly poor game of football, and serious business needed to be done in the January transfer window!
After watching Paul Merson reveal that he was unconvinced by the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti at Everton, fans took to suggest that he was jealous that Arsenal never got him in – see those tweets and more on the next page.
