VIDEO: Match stopped as Southend fan pushes steward to fight Dagenham supporters

A match had to be stopped on Saturday as a Southend United fan pushes a steward over to fight with the Dagenham & Redbridge supporters.

The FA Trophy Fourth Round fixture was stopped for around four minutes in the second half with the game marred at the actions from a number of supporters.

Following the Daggers second goal, a fan from the away end came from behind the goal ran to the left hand side of the pitch before sending a security member falling, before confronting those in the home stand.

Items are reportedly said to have been thrown by both sets of fans and Blues boss Kevin Maher explained at the final whistle why referee Sam Purkiss had been reluctant to restart the game straight away.

“He was worried about the linesman going near it,” said Maher.

Echo News say that a section of Southend’s support had started the game far closer to Dagenham’s fans before being moved behind the goal.

The game itself finish 2-0 to Dagenham, with Mo Sagaf breaking the deadlock on the 56th minute, only for Junior Morias to double the host’s advantage less than 10 minutes later.

Southend United boss Kevin Maher gave his reaction to the game, saying: “I’m frustrated.

“I thought we started ever so well and had a couple of good chances which when you’re on top you need to take.

“We probably didn’t work the keeper enough, especially in the first half when we were on top.

“But I don’t think we had enough quality in the final third to test the keeper or get that goal which is frustrating.”

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Daryl McMahon: “Delighted to win, delighted to be in the next round.

“It’s always a tough game, a bit of a derby as well but I thought we grew into the game.

“I thought first half Southend started really brightly, with decent possession of the ball. I thought we limited them to next to nothing in that first half really. And we grew into the game second half.”

McMahon added on Weston and Morias: “They’ve both been excellent. Junior was terrific again today. A real handful.

“Him and Josh (Walker) are hard to play against. You can see with Junior now, he’s a little animal up there, he’s after people, he backs into people, he’s very, very difficult to play against, I thought he was awesome today.”

“We’ve defended really, really well for the last month or so. The back three, the players in front of the back three as well, they’ve been excellent,” said McMahon.

“When El (Justham) has been called upon he makes saves. Just after half time Southend had two opportunities and he made two good saves.

“I was pleased with the clean sheet and pleased to be in the next round.”

Social media users reacted with the match stopped as Southend fan pushes steward over to fight with Dagenham supporters…

@MickT14367746: All of the supporters in the area in front of the stand, which is not a standing area, should have been in their seats. They were only in that area in an attempt to confront the Daggers fans. They caused the match to be suspended which is not acceptable at any level.

@SilkySagaf: Push on the steward was the only thing they had on target

@suavec79: That’s stewards fall needs to be checked by VAR.

@si_mac83: Southend start losing idiots appear! Someone who obviously can’t handle their drink and doesn’t like a bit of banter from opposing fans!

@ElmP1871:
Wonderful.
Evades steward, lands one and then captured.
6/10

@SunTzuPriest: He bravely knocked over a 60+ steward and swung a punch towards the fans at the front (normally young kids). Now he’ll have a criminal record and fuck all job prospects – Darwinism in action

@jacobwoods97: Not condoning it but Dagenham didn’t help themselves, had 2-3 stewards there for the whole game where you could tell there was obviously a bit of aggression from both sets of fans

@Adamod91: Its fucking bovver!!

@mrjackshaw: Steward dived red. He never touched them!

@Dazzarogers: How embarrassing doing that when you’re 2-0 down to a team you don’t have a rivalry with & in the ‘tinpot trophy’.

@harrybr89737483: The policing at Dagenham today was horrendous! No wonder why the public have lost faith in the police service.

@DanBasildonBlue: Stewarding was a joke. Especially the one who opened the gate and let them all in.

@ST_1982: Vanarama pave

@Boywife5555: This is more like the Southend I remember

@Tracey_SUFC: Why did that woman steward open the gate in the first place, it was locked they couldn’t get in, totally her fault, if she hadn’t have done that none of the following violence would have happened.

cgiless549: Fair play to the lad 👏

jack.gillingham99: Southend get battered everywhere they go

_instapudding: “I dont believe it, its fucking Bovva”
