The FA Trophy and FA Vase Fourth Round sees seven big upsets and what scenes they produced from fans as well as in the dressing rooms.
The 2021–22 competition is the 53rd season of the FA Trophy, an annual football competition for teams at levels 5-8 of the English National League System.
The campaign consists of three qualifying rounds, and seven proper rounds. Teams from level 8 enter into the first qualifying round and second qualifying round, level 7 into the third qualifying round, level 6 (the National League North and National League South) into round 2, and level 5 (the National League) into round 3.
All matches will be in a single-match knockout format, with the winner decided by penalties if the match was drawn after 90 minutes, apart from the Final where the winner will be decided by extra-time and penalties if the match is drawn.
This is the same format as the 2020–21 season which was a change from previous seasons where replays were used and where the semi-finals were scheduled as two-legged.
The draw for the fourth round took place on the 20th of December 2021 and was made up of the 32 winners from the previous round. Plymouth Parkway and Larkhall Athletic of the eighth tier were the lowest ranked teams remaining.
In the FA Trophy on Saturday afternoon, there were five upsets, with two of them going to a penalty shootout. That came after 1-1 draws in both games, with Tonbridge going on to be King’s Lynn 4-3 when it came down to spot kicks, while Needham Market knocked out Yeovil Town winning 8-7.
Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Cheshunt pulled off a convincing victory at National League South side St Albans City, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Reece Beckles Richards in the 49th minute, and two coming from Rowan Liburd on the 58th minute and again on 73 minutes.
National League South side Dartford took advantage of National League Weymouth’s dismal form by winning 1-0. Jebb opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a fantastic first time strike from the edge of the area. The game saw many a superb save from the Darts’ Dan Wilks, which helped them hold on to that valuable victory.
Morpeth Town of the Northern Premier League Premier Division also came up with a shock, coming back from 3-2 down to win 4-3 against Boston United.

Right next up, the FA Vase Fourth Round which also sees some big upsets and continue on the subject of penalty shootouts.
The 2021–22 FA Vase is the 48th season, an annual football competition for teams playing in Levels 9 and 10 (steps 5 & 6) of the English National League System.
The competition is played with two qualifying rounds followed by six proper rounds, semi-finals, and the final played at Wembley Stadium. All ties this season were played to a finish on the day.
For this season there were no replays in any of the rounds to minimise fixture congestion due to late start of the football season brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
If games finished level after 90 minutes, the match was decided by penalties to find the winner of the tie, apart from the final where there were 30 minutes extra time (15 minutes each way) followed by penalties if still level after the extra time period.
North West Counties League Division One South outfit Abbey Hey drew 2–2 with AFC Liverpool only to win 6-5 on spot kicks.
Stansfeld of the Southern Counties East League Division One only need the 90 minutes to seal their place into the next round, winning 2-1 against Raynes Park Vale.
