Fans have been stunned as Ravel Morrison ends an eight-year wait by scoring a wonder goal to help Derby County beat Barnsley 2-0.
It was a game that Wayne Rooney said his side had to win, and that they did, thanks to Morrison’s first goal in English league football for eight years — and then his second to secure all three points and have the Pride park faithful roaring.
As they have done for much of this season, Derby showed that they had never given up hope, and now find themselves five points from safety, despite it looking very bleak a few weeks ago.
This was his Morrison’s first goal in a league game since he scored a late goal in QPR’s 5-2 Championship victory over Nottingham Forest almost eight years ago.
Lineker retweeted a clip of the goal on Twitter, with the caption: “Oh we like that.”

After being handed a mammoth 21-point deduction, the Rams are right up against it if they want to pull off what many believe would be one of the greatest escapes of all time.
Morrison said says the mood in the camp is good after a much-needed win against one of their drop rivals – and spoke of his happiness at finally getting that long-awaited goal.
“I’m buzzing to finally get on the scoresheet and it’s a massive three points for us and the club,” he told RamsTV.
“I thought the first goal was offside! The only reason I dinked it was because I thought it was offside so I just went for it. I looked over at the linesman and the flag was down so it was a massive relief.
“It’s always a joy to score. The main thing is that we win and take the three points so it’s massive for us.
“It was a must-win game. I do believe we were better than them and we are better than them. That’s no disrespect to them.
“We look at the table with the points that we’ve got and the points that have been taken off us, we would be up there.
“We are all together and fighting for it. We have got a great bunch here. Loads of great players, all the staff, it’s nice going in every day because it’s a good environment.
“We build up well and we’ve all got each other’s backs and that’s the main thing. We are not focusing on the table, we are just enjoying ourselves every week and trying our hardest for the fans because they’re trying their hardest for us and being right behind us.”
Rosenior said: “I think everyone did, didn’t they, from start to finish?
“When you see a lad like Malcolm Ebiowei come in, and the freedom he is playing with, and you see the way Ravel Morrison finished his two goals, and the type of football we are playing on a difficult pitch – as a coach, and for Wayne [Rooney] as a manager, I think they are the moments you are in football for because a lot of work has gone into that performance.
“I know we lost the game at Cardiff, and we were devastated to lose that game, but in terms of going away to Cardiff with basically a group of young players and taking 70% of the ball and playing in a style I don’t think many people have spoken about yet, we as coaches have been delighted with the players.
“Even in the defeat at Luton, even in the defeat by Cardiff, the performances were good. When you are on a good run of performances, you end up getting your just rewards.
“I can’t fault the players with the ball, I can’t fault them without the ball. The players are giving everything for the cause.”
As mentioned, fans were stunned as Ravel Morrison ends an eight-year wait by scoring a wonder goal…
@mexicola25 : There is something really beautiful that of all the people to finally get through and help Ravel Morrison settle and start delivering on football pitch it is Wayne Rooney
@VR46GAZ : Ohhh what could have been for that lad, such a shame as he’s ridiculously gifted!!
@MrLuxuryYacht : Even as a Forest fan, in the words of Barry Davies, I have to say that’s magnificent
@welsh_shaun : Classic Cole/Yorke move. I know plenty of players have done that but those two must have scored 30 goals between them just with that move alone in 98/99
@christreece_ : Player that laid it off was comfortably offside, but yes, a slick move & finish.
@robwishart : Made up for Ravel – finally found a home for his incredible talent
@Michael15340687 : If only he could do that til end of season he might keep them up
@dharvey4: Probably the best goal in the Championship this season. If you stay up with new owners next season, I can see you finishing top 6.
@2016industrial: Festys tackle & Bieliks pass 👌🏼 beautiful team goal 🐏🐏🐏
@Kingwoodyyy: Naughty goal that
@jamsey55: Not sure which would be the bigger achievement for Rooney keeping Derby up or getting Ravel Morrison scoring.
@oldbencjw: Morrison is/was an immense talent, he was mismanaged and made bad decisions when he was younger.
@MUFC1908:
Give it to @WayneRooney
Derby play SUPERB Football.
He has instilled belief in that Team I’ve not seen!
He’s also the first Manager to get the best out of Ravel Morrison.
He could easily handle Man United.
