VIDEO: Bolton boss Ian Evatt fumes after keeper’s blunder gifts Hartlepool win

Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt fumes after his keeper’s blunder gifts Hartlepool United a Papa John’s Trophy Third Round win.

It was a night to forget for the Trotters after Matty Daly capitalised on a huge mistake from Joel Dixon in the only goal of the game, coming in the 84th minute.

Footage of the goal has gone viral getting nearly 100,000 on Twitter and Sky Sports also gave it a special feature via their website.

After the game, Ian Evatt had his say: “I am furious, absolutely furious. They are not in the game. We controlled the entire game apart from the first five to 10 minutes and we haven’t scored in the first half, which is typical of us, creating lots and lots and just not been ruthless enough.

“We then just gifted them the game. They didn’t do anything to win it themselves, we just went ‘there we go, have it’. I am furious and speechless to be honest that we have given them a game when we controlled the majority of it.

“We lacked belief, confidence, composure, execution, everything. This type of night, cold, wind, bumpy pitch, it is always going to be one goal in it and you have to score and take your chances.

“To lose a game like that is absolutely infuriating.

“With the ball we did a lot right without scoring but that last 10 minutes was unforgivable.

“I think we have missed an unbelievable opportunity to get to Wembley.

“We have just gifted it to the opposition. There are lots of things we could say and lots of debris I can sift through but right now that hurts. We have beaten ourselves and that has happened too often this season.”

Adding further in relation to the keeper’s mistake, he said: ““He has to take it on the chin. When you are a footballer you will make mistakes like that, we all do, and when you do you have to own up to them.

“Yes, Joel cost us the game with the mistake but we had enough chances to have been out of sight. We all need accountability.

“We are all working tirelessly to turn it around. The debutants did well and the other players who have been suffering with Covid will get better but there is no way anyone here tonight can accept we should have lost that game.”

TWITTER REACTION:

@blastoffhtown: I see the way he wants to play out from the back and into the channels but we don’t get those passes in to the attackers quick enough and it’s just so easy to defend against

@dannywinnard: Get Gilks back in

@Leemcafee: We are in desperate need of 2 cm one forward playing and one sitting and a new gk! That’s priority in my opinion. If we sell Doyle obviously a replacement. We also need a lb who’s going to push John as he hasn’t been good enough this season

@IanMonksBWFC: IE, We completely controlled the game, I must have watched a different game

@john_docherty_: To be honest, I don’t even think we could even beat ourselves at the moment!

@Terenceprice95: Drop Dixon!

@wee_gaz: Ian. You control your bowels to avoid brown trousers… that is a life result. This is football. You score goals and win the game. The ball has to be in the opposition box as often as possible (or at least the final third)

@CabezaJake: How disrespectful to a lower league side “they didnt beat us we beat ourselves” no mate, ya got beat of a team thats just came up from non league. 🤦🏻‍♂️ and to say “we controlled the 1st 10 mins just shows how deluded you are. Keep up the good work Mr Evatt 😂😂😂😂

@WilliamFoxBWFC: Just not good enough, like a broken record

@Pools1908: Wow what an interview. Not being funny but he could have at least congratulated our 2nd team for winning tonight. However the worst thing about that interview is he didn’t even acknowledge the fans that travelled. Wish you all the best for the season but he is an arrogant prick

ON THE GOAL:

@bwfctalk: It actually gets worse every time I watch it – what on Earth was he thinking, it’s so bad it’s actually laughable #bwfc

@JayGandy9: He needs to go. Every game I’ve watched this season he’s looked suspect at points.. gets slated for something most games, not easy being a keeper but he’s not the answer #whatsjussiupto?

@MartinWilly: To be fair to Matthews the striker was behind him. Not stood RIGHT IN FUCKING FRONT OF HIM 🤦‍♂️

@WhiteArmy90: He deserves to walk home after that!!!!!!! Absolutely awful

@aaron_drakeley: That’s a bad one, tbh. I’ve not been his biggest fan, but I think he’s been okay for us until a few weeks back. I blame him for Rotherham’s 1st goal too. We need a new keeper challenging for the 1st team; he has no competition at all. It might help him as well.

@tonyjoe90: I’ve backed Dixon for a while but nah enough is enough. Looks like a fix this on that

@matt197698: I’m sorry but that’s f*****g pathetic

@selfishsmoke: I’ve said all season the lad is fuckin shit
