Verwood’s Louis McWilliams stuns opposition with incredible halfway line goal gone viral

Verwood’s Louis McWilliams stuns the opposition with his incredible halfway line goal gone viral in the game against Amesbury.

A stunning long range goal (his second goal of the match) sealed all three points for Verwood with the game ending in a 2-0 win.

Verwood currently sit 10th in the Wessex League Division One, with 26 points from 21 games played, while Amesbury are second from bottom in 19th, with 10 points from 20 played.

The leaders of that league are New Milton Town with 45 points from 22 games, while second place is unbeaten Andover New Street also with 45 points but from 17 games.

The quality of football was described as being not the best as the first half played out, though Louis McWilliams was there to break the deadlock 10 minutes in as he got onto a ball just on the edge of Amesbury’s area and placing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Amesbury got themselves back in possession, sending in a few corners but couldn’t make the most from their chances or find that much needed equaliser.

The game saw a number of incidents with Jack Broad getting sent off for getting physical.

Verwood say in their report of the match that ‘a couple of minutes of madness saw both teams argue and needed settling before the game could continue’.

The referees turned down penalty calls which was met with irate resistance. A free kick on the edge of the box was then capably dealt with by Broom steering the ball away from danger.

Handbags played out again with Amesbury trying to go forward.

26 minutes gone and Smith swept down the right, however, there was a strong challenge as Smith tried to get the ball across the area.

McWilliams put the ball into the net with his head, but it was ruled out as the ref decided he had blown the whistle before the ball crossed the line.

Fishlock also scored moments after that, but again no goal with it deemed a collision had resulted in a head wound and the referee had blown for attention from physios.

On 47 minutes, Carswell intercepted a long ball meant for an oncoming runner, but Verwood were handed a free kick following a tackle, giving the hosts a free kick.

McWilliams saw the Amesbury keeper was out of his goal area, and let fly a powerful looping ball which went over the keeper and in the net to make it 2-0.

Amesbury continued battling, trying to get one back, but that was made tougher when Amesbury’s keeper received a red card meaning both sides had 10 men each.

There was a lot of reaction as Verwood’s Louis McWilliams stuns the opposition with an incredible halfway line goal gone viral, getting over 50,000 views on Twitter alone.

@R0hanF: Am I the only person wondering why there’s a corner flag on the halfway line

@dazza_nics: Why is the Amesbury lad setting the ball for him? 🤣

@Bugzymalone1969: Nice set by the opposition 👍🤣⚽️

@phillafferty1: The blue no7 teeing this up is criminal itself. Shameful behaviour. Some strike though 👏

@therealjaimo17:
So much wrong with this clip…
– what’s the free kick for?
– if there’s a free kick surely it’s to the blue team
– and it’s indirect
– opposition set up
– veo not zooming in, fail to see the money shot

@ManLikeCocky:
Great assist from the 7
