Bootlegger was on talkSPORT this week, and claims: “Wrexham players are capable of League One and even Championship football”.
Karl Phillips appeared on the radio station to talk all things Wrexham, after the National League side’s big FA Cup win at Championship outfit Coventry City at the weekend.
Laura Wood said: There’s a lot of conversation around wrexham at the moment and so much attention as that as there would be with getting all these Hollywood owners and everything but in terms of what you’v seen on the pitch how far do you think you can go in the FA Cup?
He replied: “Sheffield United at home, another Championship team. That Racecourse Ground is going to be absolutely bouncing for the visit of them, and I think we can give them another game.
“I was confident when we drew Coventry because they’ve been in poor form of late and it was a good gauge to see just how good this group of players that win a matching it is now, because they’re all capable of League One and certainly capable of Championship football.
“The sky is the limit for us since the takeover. It’s good that we’re no longer Ally [McCoist], looking over our shoulders, worrying about financial issues, but we are still at the moment, embroiled in the biggest battle in our history, and that’s gaining entry back into the Football League.”

His autobiography was published back in March, and it highlights his much-loved and often wild sense of humour, which has earned him such a huge public following, particularly with Wrexhamâs fanbase.
According to Bootlegger, he was never much of a football fan as a boy, saying: âFootball wasnât really on my radar as a young lad. I was too busy ducking and diving.
âIn all honesty, I was more interested in going out gallivanting with my mates in the Nineties and doing what young lads do.â
He said: âAfter a few videos of just larking about, I went on to vlog my match-day experiences. My first was for a home match â Wrexham v. Cambridge. I uploaded the video and titled it âBootlegger MOTDâ. It gained a bit of a cult status amongst the Wrexham diehards. Before long, I found myself interviewing various locals.
âI got the knack of editing and embedding graphics. I really did think I was going to be Wrexhamâs answer to Steven Spielberg.
âI created different characters, like Bubba Ball Bag and Taffy. These were the main protagonists. But there was one character that didnât require so much acting. He was âThe Bootleggerâ, AKA The Captain. The Captain would attend games proudly wearing the red Wrexham shirt and a brown leather jacket, which I christened âThe Italian Pigskinâ. The Italian pigskin wasnât from Italy and I doubt it was even made of leather, but the rain wouldnât half bounce off it.â
Back to Wrexham, and manager Phil Parkinson says wants to see The Racecourse bouncing on Tuesday night as his side return home to resume the title challenge, before facing the Blades in the next round of the FA Cup.
“The focus is now on Bromley and there is nothing better as a player when you are running out at home after an away victory, but an away victory of that magnitude is even better,” he said, as per Leader Live.
“We are all looking forward to a night under the lights at The Racecourse.
“I want everyone who comes in the ground to support us to be ready to play their part.
“I really want to get The Racecourse bouncing and we will be ready.
“The lads know Coventry was a bonus day, a great day out for everybody connected with the club and the adrenalin will be pumping with the supporters.
“But we will settle down and be ready to go again against Bromley.”
Wrexham currently sit second in the table, with 56 points from 24 games played and five points behind leaders Notts County, but the Welsh outfit have two games in and over them.
“The performance against Coventry is another lift for us in terms of what we feel we are capable of,” added Parkinson.
“If you look at the other side, it can be damaging for Coventry’s confidence.
“That is why the Blyth and Farnborough cup games for instance, the momentum of getting through those games was important for our league form around that time, and this one is put into that category as well.”
Wrexham boss Parkinson said after his side beat Coventry: âIâm so pleased with the boys.
Itâs a great chapter in the story of Wrexham since the new owners have come in and Iâm sure they will be overjoyed with what theyâve seen today.
âThereâs a fantastic positive vibe in the town and behind the team, thereâs a real buzz everywhere you go.
âItâs been great to be a part of that and today. The FA Cup, Wrexham, weâve got a very good record in terms of some great wins over the years and wherever I go since Iâve been manager people speak to me about those special days.
âIt was important for us today that we enjoyed the occasion but that we put in a performance that reflected how I know we can play â and I felt we did that.â
Parkinson added: âIt was so important today that we put in a performance to reflect the history of the club in the FA Cup and the amazing support we knew weâd have here today.
âSome of the football we played was good, we had a nice physicality about us as well, so itâs just a great day for everybody connected with the club.
âItâs not often as a player or manager youâve got a game against a club three divisions above in front of 5,000 of your own fans and itâs important to savour those moments.
âWeâve had to show many different qualities to get over the line, we didnât want to come here today and just soak up pressure, I wanted to come and play.â
