Update given as Everton send support to Kevin Campbell “very unwell” in hospital

Update given as Everton send a message of support to former footballer Kevin Campbell who is “very unwell” in hospital.

The 54 year old, who initially started his professional career at Arsenal, reportedly fell ill last week and was ‘rushed to hospital’.

The football community, including fans, players past and present, staff and clubs, has rallied around Campbell, with well wishes flooding social media at the weekend, while also highlighting Campbell’s impact both on and off the field.

Everton wrote in a tweet: “We have been made aware our former striker Kevin Campbell is currently very unwell.

“Not just a great footballer but an incredible person, Kevin is, and always has been, a fighter and we wish him and his family well at this challenging time.

“Sending all our love, @1kevincampbell. ๐Ÿ’™”

His former teammate Ray Parlour also sent a heartfelt message: “I hear my ex-teammate Kevin Campbell is struggling at the moment.

“All your friends and family, all the football family are right behind you Kev. I know you’re a strong character mate, stay positive.

“I’m sure everybody is on your side trying to help you, so hopefully get well soon mate and you’ll be back flying as usual.”

Arsenal also tweeted: “Everyone at the club is sending love to Kevin Campbell and his family, following news that our former striker is very unwell. Weโ€™re thinking of you, @1kevincampbellโค๏ธ”

Campbell, who rose from Arsenal’s youth system, made his debut in 1988, then had loan spells at Leyton Orient and Leicester City, before becoming an integral part of Arsenal’s 1990-91 league winning squad.

He played a role in helping the Gunners secure the FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993, as well as the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994.

Then following his time at Nottingham Forest and Trabzonspor in Turkey, Campbell joined Everton on loan in March 1999.

He netted nine goals in the last eight Premier League matches which helped prevent Everton’s relegation.

Subsequently, Campbell made a permanent move to Everton that summer and remained with the club for over five seasons.

He ended his professional career with stints at West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City, accumulating a total of 148 goals from 542 appearances.

Since retiring, Campbell has been actively involved in the media as a pundit for various media outlets.
