Two League One managers linked with Barnsley vacancy as six-man shortlist revealed

Two League One managers have been linked with the Barnsley vacancy as reports of a six-man shortlist is revealed by local media on Friday.

The Tykes are expecting their search for a new head coach to hopefully conclude by the 13th of June with the process said to have been thorough with countless names in contact with the club already.

Yorkshire Post report that candidates have also had to fill in an extensive questionnaire with some of the answers being scrutinised.

Confirmed names include Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff and Burton Albion manager Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink while Manchester United set-piece coach Eric Ramsay is another listed, though recent reports claim that new Red Devils chief Erik ten Hag is keen to retain the services of the 30-year-old.

On the process, Reds chief executive officer Khaled El-Ahmad said: “There are really three ‘buckets’ [of candidates].

“One is the very experienced, one is the up-and-coming who don’t necessarily have a lot of managerial experience and the other one is what I call the solid option that has some seasons behind them.

“We have interviewed and spoken to all the variations which will hopefully lead us to the one we think is the best fit.

“It is also very important that we want a manager who wants to come to Barnsley. During the process, someone might be enticed and excited about the job, but then you find that they don’t really want to be here. It has to be the right fit.

“There are three ways of it [finding candidates]. References, agents putting names forward and our own potential search of approaching certain managers.

“You put everything in and rank them in terms of data, the way we want to play and experience. They are some of the parameters and you start doing the interviews and it becomes clearer and clearer. It has been a long list.

“I have five [final candidates] and potentially there’s one more to come in.

“Ultimately, I want to make that decision before pre-season.

“But it is also financial. We are not going to offer money we cannot afford.

“It is not as easy as just appointing the manager you want and then think you are going to get them. There are various factors in it.

“A contractual situation, money, availability, [rival] interest.

“I would hope that with the manager we bring, that all of us believe he is the right manager/head coach for Barnsley Football Club.”

El-Ahmad adds: “Without speaking about specific names, I think it is a natural progression.

“You get relegated, some have been here a long time, some see their contracts expire soon.

“It is a mutual discussion both ways, but ultimately they are under contract and the club controls their destiny.”

Warnock isn’t thought to be one of those on the list, however he could still be added, and Yorkshire Post adds that one candidate has withdrawn this week.

“I reached out to Neil and I will be speaking to him again,” El-Ahmad told the Barnsley Chronicle. “We haven’t got that far with him. There could be more names added to the final list.”

Days after he announced his retirement he said in an interview: “I am definitely supposed to be retiring. But I can’t get rid of it, whatever it is. My wife Sharon knows. I wanna try to have a bit of time and I will but you never know what’s around the corner, do you?”

El-Ahmad told the Yorkshire Post the club have interviewed candidates who fit into three different “buckets” – “One is the very experienced, one is the up-and-coming who don’t necessarily have a lot of managerial experience and the other one is what I call the solid option that has some seasons behind them.”

Fans reacted over two League One managers linked with the Barnsley vacancy as a six-man shortlist is revealed…

@cordingley_p: @warnockofficial Please come to @BarnsleyFC. You are exactly what we need right now: a passionate, dedicated no nonsense manager, who will bring in solid experienced professionals to blend in with our young keen to learn younger ones. PLEASE!!

@DanielN34041762: Get warnock in now for 2 year hopefully promotion and keeping us up . Have md and th working with him . When he retires in 2 years let him hand over the job to them #barnsleyfc

@JonnyCave: One more crack for @warnockofficial, a proper Oakwell send off with a promotion now that would be great

@Alex_Red_87: That’s good. Rather have duff but definitely warnock over jfh

@NMawson: I’d be very happy with @warnockofficial. Make it happen @BarnsleyFC

@ephemeralisall: Thought Warnock had retired? 🤔 We would have had a good chance of staying up if we’d brought him in last season after Schopp went. He’d be a great appointment but the board would have to give him control of the team

@delboy2929: If this is true and we really have asked him to be considered as our new manager and with the fact that he him self said he would have come to Barnsley to help to keep us up last season then this news is awesome and if we pull it of then we have a greater chance of staying up now

@AdsWatson84: This needed to be done when Schopp went, we need someone who’s gonna be here for 3, 4, 5 years to get stability and rebuild.

@richardhazelhu2: Love it to happen. But I don’t think it will…

@Alex_James95: @warnockofficial is this true?

@TJKenny_: Can we afford him?

@neilmeynell: Warnock. 12 month deal, show devaney the ropes, jobs a good in….

@danspeight22: About 6 month too late but I suppose they have to say things to get fans back onside. Actions speak louder than words.

@Vellobfc: He won’t come now, but it’s a funny one this cos his style is totally different to the style Khaled says we wanna play 🤷🏼‍♂️

@bfc_cheets: YOUVE GOT TO DIE TO GET 3 POINTS has to be ringed out around oakwell if we appoint him

@joshathertonn: Interesting. Would’ve been a perfect appointment 6 months ago. Not sure now from a long-term view but I suppose there’s value in him bringing a defined set of principles to create an identity and reset the culture at the club. Also, not sure how many “Warnock” players we have 😬

@_k3lsx: Neil Warnocks red & white army? 😍
