Two 40-yard goals scored in the EFL on Saturday – but which was better?

Two 40-yard goals were scored in the EFL on Saturday afternoon – but which was better? Time to take a look a judge for ourselves.

Crawley’s Jack Powell and Accrington’s Ethan Hamilton both scored stunners, and both of them have since gone viral on social media.

After Nick Tsaroulla had put Crawley in front with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, Powell produced a 40-yard effort four minutes later to seal a fourth home League Two win in five matches.

New boss Matthew Etherington went into his first game in charge of Crawley insisting that “everyone has to start somewhere” as he responded to criticism from some supporters worried about his suitability for his first senior role.

Powell made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute by sending the ball into an empty net with goalkeeper Brynn coming outside his area to clear from Aramide Oteh.

There was a lengthy delay before nine minutes of stoppage time when Robins midfielder Saidou Khan was stretchered off having collided with the post.

“The out of possession stuff was really good,” Etherington said.

“The effort and workrate from the players was outstanding.

“That’s what we demand.

“They [Swindon] didn’t cause us that many problems. Our keeper didn’t have a save to make in the first half.

“It was pleasing. In terms of the way they’ve bought into the way me and Simon [Davies] work, I couldn’t praise them enough.

“They’ve been brilliant and really bought into our ideas.

“On the ball, I want us to get better. But that’s not going to happen overnight – we’ve had four training days.

“After the substitutions, we had more threat and more pace. Hopefully moving forward, we will see a team a little bit better in possession. We will get there.

“The defensive transition was pleasing. It was a positive reaction from the players in terms of winning the ball back as soon as possible.

“It isn’t easy, it’s hard work. I know it because I’ve played in teams that want exactly the same thing.

“Swindon boss possession against most teams in this league and they’re in the play offs and you can see why.

“I want us to play attacking, be a threat, with pace, get shots off and score plenty of goals, on a consistent basis. That’s where I want us to get to.

“The result was important today. There’s loads to work on but I think we will get the best out of these players.”

Meanwhile, another goal in the EFL was scored from around 40 yards out, coming at Accrington when they got a late equaliser against Oxford.

Oxford extended their unbeaten League One run up to seven games, but were forced to settle for a draw at Accrington.

James Henry gave the U’s an early lead in the 58th minute, before Ethan Hamilton scored with six minutes left to save a point for Stanley.

A Lewis Bate curling strike in the seventh minute was the closest visitors came to breaking the deadlock.

Stanley’s best shot was Hamilton’s strike at far post, which was deflected for a corner in 40 minutes.

Oxford began the second half with more intention and Matty Taylor blasted past the bar.

Henry scored from close range after Marcus Browne, a visitor, tricked his path to the byline.

The hosts searched for an equaliser. Shaun Whalley headed wide, and Simon Eastwood stopped Tommy Leigh’s 82nd minute strike.

Accrington were rewarded for their point thanks to Hamilton’s moment of magic.

John Coleman said: “Fantastic strike and we know he’s got it in him.

“Unfortunately he’s gone through a spell with them shots getting blocked and he freed himself.

“He was fantastic today, he covered every blade of glass, it was unbelievable today, as was the majority of our team.

“And a fantastic goal and it deserves to win a game, and if the laws would have been adhered to it would have won the game.”
