Trouble at Stevenage with flare thrown onto pitch and steward ‘assaults’ Cambridge fan

There was trouble at Stevenage with a flare thrown onto pitch and a steward accused of ‘assaulting’ a Cambridge fan on Tuesday night.

One incident saw the League One clash temporarily stopped with a Cambridge flare removed from Boro’s penalty area just as the U’s had been on the attack pushing for an equaliser in the 93rd minute.

Another video has emerged, this time showing heated scenes involving Cambridge fans and Stevenage stewards, as can be seen in the videos below…

CAMBRIDGE STATEMENT:

Cambridge United is deeply disappointed by the disgraceful behaviour of a minority of its supporters at last night’s EFL League One fixture at Stevenage FC…

They do not represent who we are as a Club and we are taking the issue very seriously. Unacceptable conduct was witnessed by both sets of supporters and the Club is already working with the Police to identify those involved from Cambridge United. We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour and will sanction those responsible accordingly. Any supporters who are able to assist with this process should email info@cambridgeunited.com.

As a Club we pride ourselves on being a family and community focused organisation which helps contribute towards providing a safe environment in which to watch live football. The support the team has received this season has been exceptional. Any individuals who threaten to jeopardise this will be issued suitable bans inline with our Supporter Sanction Policy. We do not want them as part of our football Club.

In addition, the Club is aware of multiple safety matters which arose last night within the stadium and is working in conjunction with Cambridge United Supporters Pannel (CUSP) to collate information which in turn will be shared with the relevant authorities. Supporters wishing to contribute should email cuspuie2019@gmail.com.

STEVENAGE STATEMENT:

Stevenage Football Club condemns the conduct of a minority of fans at Tuesday evening’s fixture vs Cambridge United at The Lamex Stadium…

We are particularly disappointed that smoke bombs were smuggled into the stadium by Cambridge fans, despite a full body search and bag search of adults entering the stadium.

The yellow smoke bomb thrown onto the pitch by a Cambridge supporter towards the end of the game is especially disappointing. Fortunately, there were no players or officials nearby and the stewards were especially quick to remove it from the pitch so play could resume.

The Club’s safety team are conducting a full investigation and are working with the police to identify any perpetrators involved.

Supporters can assist the investigation by emailing info@stevenagefc.com in confidence.

The game itself saw Jordan Roberts finding the back of the net to secure the only goal of the match, with the win for Stevenage seeing them climb back into the League One playoff places.

Roberts broke the deadlock just before half time, scoring from outside the box past Cambridge’s goalkeeper Jack Stevens. Despite Stevenage’s dominance, Stevens managed to make crucial saves to keep the U’s in the game.

Stevenage held on for all three points, and it’s fair to say Steve Evans was pleased judging by his post match celebrations.

Stevenage: Ashby-Hammond, Wildin, Butler, Piergianni, Forster-Caskey (Guinness-Walker 80), Roberts (White 88), Vancooten, Burns, Reid (Oliver 88), L.Thompson, Hemmings (Freeman 80).

Sub (not used): MacGillivray, Sweeney, MacDonald.

Booked: Forster-Caskey 45

Cambridge United: Stevens, Andrew, Digby, Morrison, R.Bennett, Lankester, Kaikai (Kachunga 64), May (Brophy 64), Cousins, Gibbons (L.Bennett 64), Bonne.

Subs (not used): Mannion, Rossi, Year, Njoku.

Booked: Cousins 43

Referee: Alex Chilowicz (USA)

Attendance: 6,553 (including 1,384 from Cambridge)

Steve Evans said, as per The Comet: “There’s been some strange results tonight but as I said to the players, when you’re in a promotional season, there are loads of storms that will come.

“Storms can be oppositions, storms can be officials or players getting injured or bad misses and storms can be bad mistakes at the back.

“But you learn to dance in the rain, that’s what you do and that means you learn to work hard and you learn to be disciplined.

“I thought the players danced in the rain tonight.

“The performance was outstanding for long periods in the game against a team of players I’ve got a lot of respect for.

“Under Neil Harris they became a team and we watched the re-run of their game against Peterborough and that could have gone either way.

“This was more one-sided than that and the only downside is we don’t get the second goal and kill the game.

“If we get that, we get that few more.

“But it was back to back wins and we’ve spoken about the importance of the two wins and the boys have delivered that.”

He adds: “We had a couple of one-on-ones and you have to take them.

“We’d expect Jamie Reid to do better but the kid’s been on his on the treatment table for well over a week.

“And we’d expect Forster Caskey to put the header into the net.

“It’s a brilliant run from Jake and I thought his runs all night into the box were excellent.

“There’s no reason why we don’t [go on and score three or four tonight] but the contribution we got from the strikers was good.

“We’ve been operating without Jamie Reid for nine to 10 days so we brought Kane Hemmings back in.

“And then even when the boys run out of legs, we threw Jordan Roberts up. He was outstanding.

“And then people don’t see this, but we see it as a management team, we threw big Vadaine on and that’s the most impact he’s had in the game since the first half at Wigan.

“He’s suddenly come on in but in fairness to Alex Revell, he’s done a lot of fitness work, a lot of finishing work and a lot of work on timing of headers.

“That will be really crucial to us in the next 12 games.”

Social media users gave their reaction having seen trouble at Stevenage with a flare thrown onto pitch and a steward allegedly ‘assaults’ a Cambridge fan…

Leah Marsh: Stewards were throwing out a young lad that was vaping. I mean, come on!! How pathetic. Two stewards that were guiding him out wanted to take him to the opposite exit. However, I saw a third steward pointing to the other side where all the chavs were, ready for a fight. That’s what caused the issue. If they’d gone the opposite end I don’t think it would have kicked off. Also, what were police doing?! I barely saw them get involved. They just seemed to let the stewards try to handle the fans in the home end when clearly they couldn’t. Pathetic all round

James Evans: It was disgusting. I saw it all happen. Not only that a steward took out my 61 year old dad with a knee to thr leg and all the stewards couldn’t give a flying fuck. They started it all. I don’t like trouble at football for no reason either but I fully support and will stand by them lads for defending there friend and fellow united fan. Police just kept playing it all off when speaking to them. They could all see the ones throwing shit and they did nothing.one of there idiot fans even through his keys. It was one massive joke. I hope any children who saw it aren’t to put off as that must of been terrifying especially when people who are to keep everyone safe are failing big time

Michell Sell: It sound absolutely disgusting and was a actual assault on the young lad from the video I have seen you can see home fans throwing stuff at united fans it’s a sad day when you can’t enjoy a game of football without someone throttling a young lad for vaping and to take him towards home supporters was dam right dangerous!

Ben Thapa: Irony is that the smoke bomb (if you’re in this group, you’re what you are) came on to the ground as we were building a promising attack: sadly it was Danny Andrew in possession so we can’t claim it would come to anything. He had a stinker tonight. Cousins had half a stinker then stepped up. Macaulay looks light for this level. Changes made a big difference. Still a 5 point gap to the bottom 4. We go again – there are winnable games in March. Let’s get behind them and get us over the line.

Nathan Stokes: This crowd trouble needs to stop as we will definitely get fined and if it gets worse maybe lose points!

Sean McConville: All started with one of are fans getting put in a headlock by one of the security staff then the rest was history not condemning any of it but Stevenage fans were just as bad if not worse middle age men jumping on the pitch giving it the big one absolute tin pot of a ground

James Clements: Whoever threw that flair on the pitch? You know what you are. Do you want us to get fined and lose points. We really are in a dog fight now for the rest of the season.

Matt Bell: Our only decent move of the game and some bellend throws a flair on the pitch and stops it. Just sums Cambridge United up at the moment.

Martin Jordan: Somebody knows who they are, need to have the guts to report them. CUFC do not need them.

@dannybuckers: You’re 1-0 down in the closing minutes of the game away to your local rivals. Pick up the ball in midfield and catch them on the counter. Only for a fan to throw a flare on the pitch to get the game stopped. Absolutely classic from Cambridge tonight, what a shambles of a club.

@Hcooke02: Literally was 20 of them on 1 steward and he was still standing ahah

@Sfcsmithy98: Laughed rather hard at that

@ReeceDSport: Remember when Cambridge stopped their own dangerous attack in the last minute because they threw a flare on the pitch. That was golden

@TylerWake2: cambridge fans chucking a flare at our keeper in added time as they were on the counter & stopping play is the highlight of my night. goodnight twitter😘

@tomhawkins23: Easily the most stupid thing I’ve ever seen and no surprise it’s from Cambridge fans

@SFC_Interviews: Imagine doing this when you’re 1-0 down and times running out 😂😂😂

@RobHolder92: I despair sometimes, I really really do.

@TommymSpencer: No pyro no party

@TheHaydnVincent: I wanna shake dude’s hand 😂

@LtfcWardy: Very very funny

@luke_watson94: I reiterate my point from last night, whoever threw that flare is a grade A wanker and shouldn’t come to anymore games because they clearly don’t care about the team.

@Denton_james: I really wish these gremlins would fuck off out of football and quick. Main character syndrome from every single one of them

@WattsSW12: What’s worst is the stewards attempt to stop it
