Tranmere booed off as under pressure Nigel Adkins refuses to walk away after defeat to Colchester

Tranmere Rovers were booed off as an under pressure Nigel Adkins refuses to walk away after a 3-1 defeat to Colchester United on Saturday.

Tranmere fans chanted “We want Adkins out” during the second half, with the result meaning their side have lost four of their last five.

The table sees Tranmere sitting 22nd in League Two with 26 points from 28 games played, and 3 points above the drop zone. Colchester are 13th with 37 points from 28 games.

Tranmere Rovers manager Nigel Adkins: “Not good enough. I think when you look at the week we’ve had, the first half was nowhere near the energy that we’d expect to have, especially when we are at home so that’s something I’ll look at.

“We didn’t have the energy at all. It doesn’t help when we give a penalty away. Poor defending, he should be aware of what’s around him. So all of a sudden we are 1-0 down early on from the penalty. Poor decision, poor penalty.

“Second goal we’ve given away – we knew they pull back on the crosses – so they’ve got into a position far too easily for me, again I’m looking at energy.

“So all of a sudden we’re now 2-0 down. Nowhere good enough in the first half for what I’m expecting, for what we’re expecting.

“Energy was really down. We tipped about with the football a little bit but that was too easy for them, we never hurt them at all.

“Second half, we made a couple of changes. More direct in our nature, a 1-4-2-4 if you like.

“Get the ball forward, try and create something, get back into the game and we do.

“Great finish from Kristian Dennis, that’s what he does. He’s done exactly what we were looking to go and do, force the issue, the crowd were up and behind the players. 2-1, game on.

“You think here we go, and from our free-kick into the box, second phase comes out. We’ve had a good 15 or 20 minute spell there and then obviously a ball is given away and they’ve countered on us and to be fair, the players got back to cover and the lad’s had a shot and it’s took a deflection and gone past Luke and he’s right behind him, so 3-1 then, which makes it very very difficult.

“It wasn’t the result or the performance we were after. We tried to affect it and it hasn’t happened.”

He added, per Wirral Globe: “I get the frustration because we’re in a really difficult position.

“I get it and I’m sure everyone can appreciate I’m someone at their hometown club and in the dugout and hearing people saying what they’re saying.

“We’re doing what we can but results dictate and that’s football and the life of a football manager.

“We’ve got a terrific owner here and he’s got a decision to go and make and at the moment he’s been fantastic.

“It’s about us sticking together and there’s a lot of hurt in the dressing room but it’s my hometown club and it’s not nice.

“I’ll speak to the owner, he wants the best for this football club, I want the best for the football club and I’m going to give it all that I’ve got.

“I’m not going to walk away from anything, let me make that clear.

“We’re in a mire and in a fight and I’ve got belief in my coaching staff and my players.

“We’re up against it but I’m not going to walk away.”

On if he would be resign: “People want a change and that’s what happens in football management but I know what we do behind the scenes and how hard the coaches work.

“I love the football club and I know some people will say ‘if you love it walk away’ but the owner wants me to stay and keep working hard and I want to stay and keep working hard.

“I understand what happens in football but we’re up against it and I ain’t going to walk away while I know I have a raft of experience to steady the ship and I’m strong enough to deal with the situation.

“I’ve got to support these young men as much as I can to go and perform.”

Fans reacted with Tranmere booed off as under pressure Nigel Adkins refuses to walk away after defeat to Colchester…

@JackWK97: That’s not a club statement

@GrangeMount: You’re deluded and your knowledge/strategy is at least 5-10 years old. The only allowance I’ll give you is that you have a playing squad comprising the worst bunch of shithouses that I’ve ever seen pull on that white shirt. You’re all frauds.

@FerryLad: Why is he leaving the decision to the chairman? If he had any dignity or respect, he would resign.

@JamesTcrinkle: I think it’s in everyone’s best interests for him to go. We need something to change, otherwise we are going back to the national league.

@loneranger0714: Do the right thing for you’re home town club then please Nigel because you are obviously not the man sadly but true

@davidgatley: Is this a windup? He cannot still have a job after today’s shambles

@shiremord53: Great guy nice personality. Bad manager. Poor from Palios for keeping him for this long on the fans and on him . He’s hung him out to dry

@PeterCo27578446: The fans comments and views no longer seem to count or carry any weight to this club, but this club seems to be a shambles. Have the owners , manager and coaching staff got no pride in what they do or no respect for the fan base of TRFC ?

@ReflexKeepers: Sacked or not, last time you’ll will see me at Prenton Park until he’s gone! Worst side I’ve seen in 30 years at Rovers.

@TRFC1980: No matter what we say, our opinion doesn’t matter to the ‘top cheeses’. It’s criminal what’s going on at our football club.

@EcxoesGaming: GET HIM GONE, GET THE WHOLE BACKROOM STAFF GONE. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL WEEK AFTER WEEK. WAS IT SENDINGS OFF THIS WEEK? WAS IT LUCK? SURELY WE WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS

@angroid69: This is unforgivable now. First time I’m saying this, but Adkins has to go. He’s obviously looking at football in a different way to most fans as it’s been obviously all season his selections and subs have been dreadful. He doesn’t seem to learn from it unfortunately. Please go.

@Tramnear: The only bright spark of the game was the Kop chanting ‘Were on our way, on our way to the National League’ was pure class. Whoever started that chant take a bow. That needs to be the chant at every game for the rest of the season. It’s what it means to be a Tranmere fan IMO.

@TheSmartRover: That first half was abysmal then we got a lifeline but Nigel kept Finley on the pitch, what on earth was he thinking about, then they made it 1-3 due to his mistake, he should have been pulled at halftime, disgraceful from Nigel & Finley #Doomed 😢😢😢
