Tottenham add new name to four-man shortlist with Ange Postecoglou ‘set to leave’

Tottenham have decided to add a new name to four-man shortlist with Ange Postecoglou reportedly ‘set to leave’ at the end of the season.

Spurs have reportedly added Mauricio Pochettino to a four-man shortlist to replace Ange Postecoglou, whose future at the club is increasingly uncertain due to a dismal Premier League season. Scott Parker, who just won promotion with Burnley, is also being looked at.

Pochettino, who was sacked by Tottenham in 2019 after leading them to a Champions League final, is currently managing the USA national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup but has expressed openness to returning to the club.

Tottenham’s poor domestic form, with 18 defeats and a 15th-place standing, contrasts with their Europa League semi-final run, but even European success may not save Postecoglou.

The other candidates to potentially replace Ange are Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, and Fulham’s Marco Silva.

FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW TOTTENHAM MANAGER:

BetVictor – 23rd April
Mauricio Pochettino – 10/3
Andoni Iraola -7/2
Thomas Frank – 5/1
Marco Silva – 6/1
Xavi Hernandez – 8/1
Edin Terzic – 10/1
Kieran McKenna – 12/1
Massimiliano Allegri – 14/1
Brendan Rodgers – 16/1
Scott Parker – 20/1
Xabi Alonso – 20/1

The Athletic’s David Ornstein said to Sky Sports: “A number of us have been reporting for quite some weeks now that Ange is increasingly likely, to depart in the summer and Tottenham make a change in the dugout.

“That’s been reinforced by the reports. Matt Law in the Telegraph and Mike Keegan in the Mail, this evening. And, you know, the writing does appear to be on the wall as a result of a disastrous season domestically by Tottenham standards.

“They will still hope to, win the Europa League, which would be absolutely massive, not just in terms of a trophy, but qualification for the Champions League. And, you know, those reports point out that he could retain his job if, that trophy is lifted. That said, it doesn’t guarantee it, and and he may go regardless.

And I think judging by his comments in a number of his news conferences, he probably knows what’s coming. I I think Ange has has felt a little bit resigned at times when you listen to him.

“And in terms of the wider change you talk about, they’ve brought in Vinai Venkatesham, the former Arsenal chief executive, so he’ll start there in the summer.

“There have been reports in the Daily Mail that Scott Munn will be leaving his role after a relatively short time.

“And it sounds from Mike Keegan’s piece that they’ll be looking at all different departments, data analysis, medical. They’ve had so many injuries. The guy that headed up that department, Jeff Scott, left previously.

“And so, you know, Tottenham really do need to improve their their levels on and off the pitch, and and that will be something well known by the board and Daniel Levy ultimately at the top.

“They’ll look to the transfer market, I’m sure, to resolve some of the on field issues, but they’ve they’ve spent heavily. They’ve got a lot of good young players.

“And in terms of the off field, stuff, yeah, it could be it could be a busy time as well, and there’ll be candidates for that role if Ange goes. We’ve seen the likes of Iraola, Silva. Today, even Scott Parker mentioned as having admirers there.

“So it’s never nice to speak about, somebody in in this way, but it does appear to be the reality. However, the full focus of everybody at Tottenham, is this Europa League semi-final.

“They should get to the final with all due respect to Bodø/Glimt. And, you know, that’s why it’s probably realistic that they’re not having advanced conversations about Postecoglou’s departure just yet. It’s just an inevitable consequence of what we’ve seen this season.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s disappointing . Another disappointing loss. A loss that for large parts was self-inflicted. We conceded two poor goals and gave ourselves a a mountain to climb. I still think we didn’t deserve to lose on the balance of play.

“Our football was good, there’s no denying that. We created loads of opportunities, we had them pegged in. But like I said it was really disappointing to concede the two goals like we did.

“It’s hurt us all year, we’ve let ourselves down. It’s a game we should have won tonight and it’s another one this year. There shouldn’t have been slow start.

“From our perspective there was some good game time for the guys that needed it. We were able to rest a few that will help us.

“That’s the frustrating bit, it’s not the only time it’s happened this year. We have to accept the fact we haven’t been at the level we should be. I don’t like losing, we’ve lost too many games. We’ve got to keep working and try and rectify these things so the football we play gets the results it deserves.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s disappointing. It’s a game we should never lose. One we have let slip. I’m really disappointed with the goals we conceded. The most frustrating thing outside of that is our football was outstanding. We couldn’t have dominated any more than we did.

“We’ve seen this all year. We have just conceded poor goals and given ourselves a mountain to climb. It is not about mistakes being repeated but not having that concentration and focus for the whole game.

“We had a focus on Thursday night that we didn’t seem to have at the beginning of the game and then after we conceded we knuckled down and started playing our football. You can’t give teams two goal starts. There’s too many games this year that we have lost in that manner and that is why we are in the position that we are.”

On his half time changes: “It was pre-planned for van de Ven and Romero to play 45 minutes and the same with Kulusevski and Odobert who have not played in quite a while. Everyone got through it ok I guess. That is one thing but we want to maintain momentum but we missed that opportunity.

“It is a bit of a balancing act. We have got to be ready for Thursday week, that is the big game for us. We have to have all of our players healthy and in good condition.”

On facing Liverpool this weekend: “Another good test. Look if we play like we did today but keep our concentration levels where they should be then we can give them a game. We still need to rectify a couple of things.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tottenham add new name to four-man shortlist with Ange Postecoglou ‘set to leave’…

@TottenhamMasky: Can you imagine if he wins it though, first manager to win us a trophy in nearly 17 years and he just fucks off 😭

@N7Gunner: The turning point was when he saw how the Spurs fans celebrated against City after going 1-0 down.

@dannyjbradders: This can’t do them any good going into a semi-final, let alone a final. I honestly don’t think they’ll get past Bodo Glimt.

@Luke_Doherty: I agree Ange needs to leave, but on his terms similar to when he departed the Socceroos job. Seriously, look at the squad compared to those in the top 10 currently. Is it better? Not for me. Maybe in parts but not as a whole 🤷🏻‍♂️

@riflerangeboyII: Imagine if Ange leaves Spurs after winning the Europa League 💀

@Superspurs131: Although this needs to happen even with a EL win, if it’s the club that have released this information it’s yet again fucking poor from levy and the board.. Hasn’t sacked him for months of dire form then tells the world I’ll sack him even if he wins the cup 🤦🏼‍♂️. Poison chalice

@chippy_the_guv: Would be nothing more “Levy” than, if they win the EL, sacking the manager who qualified them for it via 5th, wins first trophy for 17 years, and replacing him with frank/silva/iraola/parker, none of whom have ever finished 5th, won a trophy or managed in Europe.
