Torquay United make huge decision on new stadium

It has been reported that Torquay United have made the decision to scraps plans for a new ground.

The owner has revealed that he’s ‘given up on the idea’ of a £20m complex including a 10,000 capacity stadium for the Gulls which was proposed to be at Nightingale Park in Barton.

DevonLive add that an Academy HQ, conference and concert hall, hotel, retail outlets and residential development was also planned to built.

Instead he suggests the club will stay on at their much loved home, Plainmoor, for the foreseeable future.

Osborne, who owns Riviera Stadium Ltd, has now invested over £2million into the club since coming in three years ago.

£300,000 was put into them in the first six months of their ownership, onto top of the £120,000 that they had given to the previous board a year before.

By the end of the 2017/18 season (when they were relegated to the National League South), £1.4million was pumped in to cover the losses (£959,000).

They were days away from administration and have since won immediate promotion back to the National League, numbers through the game are up and hope of a return to the EFL is suddenly back on the cards with the club sitting in the playoff zone after 16 games played.

The councillors of Torbay voted against the idea and the Torquay owner told shareholders at an annual meeting that costs meant that the new build couldn’t go ahead, though he still remains in talks as he looks for an alternative site.

After finding out that Torquay United’s new stadium plans have been scrapped, fans took to give their reaction with majority pleased – see what they had to say on the next page.
