York City co-chair Matt Uggla responds after fans call for an explanation into sacking their title winning boss Stuart Maynard.

He took to Instagram stories, posting a statement the night before the newly promoted side’s first game back in League Two in 10 years.

Scott Lindsey has since been named as Maynard’s replacement, and he received boos and chants from his own fans after a Carabao Cup Preliminary Round defeat to Crawley Town.

Two weeks ago, Stuart Maynard also issued a statement, reflecting on his time at the club, ending after just 11 months.

He guided them to the title with 108 points for the 2025/26 National League season, setting a record in the process.

Back to Matt Uggla now and here’s what he wrote via Instagram: “I know there has been a lot of speculation and talk and anger at a decision that was made.

“I take full responsibility for this and believe in it wholeheartedly.

“I’m not ever going to get into the ins and outs of what went on behind closed doors.

“What I do know is that your anger should be directed at me not the players or coaching staff. They have had no input on what has transpired and deserve your support.

“At the end of the day we all want the exact same thing which is York to be contenders. Since our arrival we have improved year on year and had a substantial rise on and off the pitch. I believe this trend will continue.

“I don’t expect to be understood or agreed with. Criticism is normal and fine and part of the industry.

“Obviously a lot has crossed the line into disrespect, which again for me is fine and I can take it no problem.

“However again the way the players and staff were treated the other night was very sad to see and probably the most disappointing moment l’ve seen at this club.

“Tomorrow is the start of a new adventure, back in the EFL for the first time in over a decade. Please get behind the players and staff and support them as they need you behind them.”

Ahead of York’s first league game on Saturday, Scott Lindsey said: “My message to the supporters is to support the players. If they don’t like me, that’s not a problem to me, honestly. It’s not. Support the players, I really want them to back the players. They’re a good side, right? If they don’t like me, I’m absolutely fine with that. And I kind of get why.

“Like you say, I’ve come into an hornets nest. You can call it that, call it whatever you want. Not a problem. I’ve got real fixed-gun bulletproof. It’s fine. Please back the players.

Steve Saxon of York City Supports Trust said to ITV: “Two and a half, three weeks ago we still had Stuart Maynard in charge. We were preparing for pre-season, there wasn’t a hint of all this coming along.

“And then over the course of 48 hours it blew up. There was a far from satisfactory explanation given. So here we are, as you say, looking forward to the first game. And yeah, genuinely looking forward to it, but at the same time with some very mixed feelings.”

@mally308: He is right on the players but I don’t think any fan was criticising or getting on the backs of players. It’s also not the new head coaches fault but equally how he handled & prepped for the game against Crawley was poor. There is still no explanation for the change in coach 🤷🏻‍♂️.
