National League Statement: Torquay United
— The National League (@TheVanaramaNL) March 13, 2024
Torquay United have been deducted ten points from the 2023/24 National League South table after the club submitted its intention to appoint administrators.
The Club had previously announced its intention to appoint administrators, and as such is a breach of League rules with regards to being impacted by an Insolvency Event and is subject to an automatic sporting sanction.
As a result, in accordance with National League rule 13.A.1, Torquay United Football Club is now subject to an automatic ten points deduction which is applied with immediate effect.
The League is working closely with the Club and will make no further statement at this time.
CLUB STATEMENT:
With Thursday marking the third week since Torquay United served its intention to appoint administrators, the Club would like to provide the Yellow Army with an update regarding the current situation.
Thank you
The Club would like to once again extend its sincere thanks to the Yellow Army, and wider footballing family for their continued support. Whether partaking in one of our recent fundraising initiatives, making a donation, attending a match, buying a scarf, or even enjoying a drink in Boots & Laces, your contribution is hugely appreciated by everyone at Plainmoor, and is helping keep YOUR club alive.
Following a week in which United received a sizeable donation from one of our National League South rivals in Weymouth, we can now confirm that our total donations received is an amazing £19,248.65.
Your continued generosity towards maintaining professional football at Plainmoor continues to be hugely appreciated, and only goes to show how important this Football Club is to so many people.
Thank you all so much.
How are things progressing?
Following the announcement of the Club’s intention to enter administration, Torquay United was officially put up for sale on Friday 23rd February, and last week Torquay United confirmed that the interim moratorium had been extended for a further 10 working days.
Everyone at Plainmoor remains determined to secure a bright and sustainable future for Torquay United, and the Club and its representatives are in constant dialogue with the National League, and prospective new owners regards a deal structure, with the TUFC recently extending its notice period of appointing an administrator for a further ten days.
The Club is continuing its discussions with various interested parties, if you, or someone you know, is interested in investing in the Club, then please get in touch immediately by emailing secretary@torquayunited.com.
As announced earlier today, Torquay United has now been informed by the National League that in accordance with Membership Rule 13A – Sporting Sanctions, TUFC has immediately been deducted 10 points for incurring an Insolvency Event. This also results in the Club being placed under a Player Embargo.
With this in mind, and with just three home games remaining, we cannot emphasise enough how important your support will be – on and off the field – during the closing weeks of the campaign, and it would be a huge boost for the players, management, staff and fellow supporters to see the stadium packed out for our matches against Hampton & Richmond, Weston-super-Mare and Havant & Waterlooville.

This is how fans reacted as Torquay United are given points deduction after submitting an ‘intention to appoint administrators’…
@sjames1132: Awful news for them.
@AllAtSeaFanzine: Jesus. Someone at @DCMS better pull their finger out @Anna_Firth @StuartAndrew @lucyfrazermp
@ar6932: Have to feel bad for them at this point
@uptheborobeans: feel bad for them but that’s huge for us
@thomaspculley: Isthmian Southern South league clear
@HiccupEU: Sad times over at Torquay, just been hit with a 10 point deduction! It’s never nice to see a club in a situation like this, hopefully they will be on the up again soon 🙏🏻
@AntCOYB86: Always found it bizzare that clubs in trouble like this get punished even more with point deductions ontop of the threat of liquidation, yet those at the top carry on killing the game with no repercussions
@Owene2220: Pray for you lot know what it’s like to have an uncertain future with my club it’s not an easy road. All the fans can do now is pull together support the team and manager 100% and hope for the best 🙏❤️
@FabPass23: Can’t believe this is happening. It just gets worse. To think we were on the brink of entering the football league only 3 years ago. Such an unpredictable game. 😞
@thfc_richie: Sorry to hear this. Absolute shambles what’s happened to Torquay. Hope someone comes in and sorts you out, like what happened to @Argyle all those years ago.
@JoeTune8: This rule shouldn’t exist why punish the players staff and fans who have worked for those points and deserve them why not punish the awful people that got us in this mess fine Clarke Osborne for all his money disgraceful
@iron_matt84: Disgusting and ridiculous, how is that going to help anyone.
@PtsColes: Should really look at a rule change that punishes owners/formers owners as opposed to punishing fans and players
@C_Stephen15: On the day that Manchester Utd announced £700m+ of debts with no repercussions whatsoever… Football is broken. Hope something is sorted soon 🙏
@meggaherne: This is bad. I get they are the rules but the club, players and staff are being punished because of one person’s lack of care for this club. It’s just really sad.
@briandalynj: A fresh start in, uh, whatever league is below this league could be… not completely terrible? Always look on the bright side of life or something? #TUFC
@Tufc_Ultra: Yellows, I think we all knew this was the expectation when we first got the news, nothing changes in my opinion, we still need as many in attendance as we can, we have some potential buyers who look serious so it’s business as usual until told otherwise #tufc
@alexbish19: Mental that struggling clubs get hit with points deductions
@TeeGee60518810: I am lost for words. Torquay just sacked Johnson after a poor run of form and just after Osborne decided to sell up this happens. I feel for all torquay fans with their club going through a tough period. To think they could get relegated twice in a row! This club needs a miracle
@Stretch972: Everyone together as one save Torquay
@upthegulls94: Less than ideal.
@AVFC1982UTV: Never understood this punishment… The club are struggling financially so let’s punish them further and take points away which could further affect their finances??!
