Top 20 most sold English football kits for 2021/22 with surprise inclusions

The Top 20 most sold English football kits for the 2021/22 season has been revealed with some surprise inclusions listed in the ranking.

A report released by LovetheSales.com shown which clubs have done well when it comes to home shirt sales via online retailers giving us a good indication of which are hot or not.

With not much to feel happy about with their side’s current start to the campaign, it will perhaps make good reading that Ipswich’s Ed Sheeran-sponsored home shirt has seen sales so high, that it has put them in the top 20 clubs in the country in ‘The Football Shirt League Table 2021/22’.

What is even more of a boost to the Tractorboys fanbase is learning that their club’s tops have been outselling East Anglian rivals and newly promoted club Norwich City, who are back in the Premier League this season, by more than 25 per cent*.

With the Canaries sitting 23rd in the table, it’s an improvement on 14 places from the same period this time last year, with Ipswich Town rising up 21 places to 17th of the 92 clubs.

Suffolk News state that the impact of Ed Sheeran linking up with his boyhood club, along with the addition of new ownership has been the reason behind selling 156% more shirts online than they did the previous summer.

Other clubs that the League One club out-rank in the table include top flight sides Burnley (28th), Watford (30th), Brighton (31st) and Southampton (32nd).

Ipswich’s kit is the fastest selling in League One, five places above Sunderland (22nd) and one above recently relegated Sheffield Wednesday (18th).

Chelsea, who saw a 50% year-on-year increase in sales since winning the Champions League and finishing in the top four in May, are placed as the number one selling new kit of the 2021/22 season. This comes despite being one of the six English clubs to announce plans to break away into a European Super League. Seems maybe the unique pattern, the recent success, optimism, and Romelu Lukaku’s arrival has been the boost the club needed following the pandemic.

The report also shows that:

– Jack Grealish is currently the leading player with the most shirt sales

– Four of the ‘SUPER 6’ see a drop in shirt sales – costing £2.3m in lost revenue a month

– Shirt sales for ‘Kane 9’ drop by 91 per cent

– Man City’s kit outsells Man United for the first time ever

Ipswich Town’s very own data has shown that the new home strip is the club’s fastest-selling of the last 10 years, increasing 70%. Fairplay.

“I want to thank the supporters for backing us,” Town’s CEO Mark Ashton told the club website last month.

“To have shirt sales up 70 per cent is fantastic and season ticket sales are going great as well.

“Our retail and ticket office staff are working around the clock to deal with the demand so I want to take this opportunity to thank them as well. It’s exciting times for the football club.”

The club’s head of retail operations, Paul Macro, said: “It’s been incredible. I haven’t seen a year like it. To put the figures into context, we’ve sold the majority of shirts on pre-order that during a normal season we’d expect to cover us until the end of the year.”

But when asked if the Ed Sheeran factor has been the big difference, he said: “We have had an increase in international orders certainly but the vast majority of sales have still been to supporters who were already registered with us but hadn’t necessarily made a purchase in the last three or four years.

“The feeling around the club after the takeover; the summer signings, the Euros – it’s all combined to ignite the fanbase I think.”

* Data is compiled from sales figures across 1,000 online retailers with LovetheSales.com saying they are restricted from publishing the full numbers and 92 ranking behind their tables. Specific data in relation to Ipswich Town has been provided to Suffolk News.

Taking inspiration from the 1964 season, when the Reds were under the management and instruction of Bill Shankly, next season’s home kit captures the glow of a bright red colourway.

In 1964, LFC introduced a full-flooded red kit for the first time in the club’s history on the basis it would provide them with a psychological edge, with Shankly famously saying that ‘red is for danger and red is for power’. This set the foundation for their dominance for years to come.

Inspired directly by that decision, the men’s and Women’s team will be walking on to the pitch with a full red kit detailed with bolted pinstripes and bright crimson sleeve cuffs and neckline – representing power, energy and danger – in 2021-22.

Constructed with 100% recycled polyester fabric, which is made from recycled plastic bottles, the new home kit created by Nike is inspired by the designs from the OP Art movement – the dynamic blueprint represents energy and vibrancy, synonymous with the new wave that is propelling the club forwards.
