Tim Walter reveals what referee Bobby Madley said over controversy in Sunderland’s win against Hull as Regis le Bris dismisses complaints.
Wilson Isidor’s individual effort proved to be the only goal of the game, helping the Black Cats take all three points, meaning they return to the top of the Championship table while Hull are 14th.
Walter took issue with Madley after the game, with Marvin Mehlem obstructed by the referee, before losing the ball, which led to the opener, but because Madley didn’t touch the ball, play was allowed to go on, with Dan Neil winning possession on the edge of Sunderland’s area, set Isidor on his way, and the goal was allowed.
“You wont see that everyday, let’s put it that way.”

Defender Alfie Jones and assistant head coach Julian Hubner received a yellow card for protesting, then head coach Tim Walter also suffered the same fate when approaching him come full time.
This was Walter’s third booking of the season, he now has to serve a one-game touchline ban and miss the midweek game against Burnley.
Hull felt decisions went against them through the game, the closest they came to scoring was when they struck the woodwork through Chris Bedia when at 0-0.
Hull were hard done by when Chris Mepham looked to handle the ball just outside the area, the referee playing on, leading to officials being booed come half time.
“Maybe you can interview the referee then it would be better,” Walter said to Hull Live. “For me, it’s really frustrating. He apologised for this situation, but it doesn’t help.
“He’s not well prepared because I said, ‘If you know how we play the corner kicks and the set pieces, then he would know that we play a lot of situations short. He said to me that he was well prepared, but unfortunately not because I did it also in my former clubs, and we do it all the time. If you don’t find the right position, then in this case, maybe you’re not well prepared, and that’s what I said to him – and he said he could not whistle.
“You can’t explain every situation; sometimes you have to accept it, and it was like it is today. It was not the only situation (referee error), because in the first half, it was also for me a clear handball. He (Mepham) played the ball with the hand back to the keeper, and for me, it’s a red card, but he saw it in a different way. We have to accept it, but it is like a never-ending story.”
“He apologised for the situation, but that doesn’t help me.”

Hull boss Tim Walter to Sky Sports:
“He [the referee] apologised for the situation, but it doesn’t help me for the moment. We lost the game because of this situation. And also in the first half there was a clear red card because he played the ball with the hand.
“But it is like lit is, it’s an old song, it’s always the same LP, you repeat it every time, but it is like it is. We have to accept it, but I am really proud of my boys, they did a good job against a top team to be honest.
“We were on the same level, but if you are top of the league maybe you have more luck than we have at the moment. But we defended well and created chances. It is like it is but we have to accept it.”
Walter told BBC Radio Humberside:
“I went to the referee’s room and they apologised for the situation but for me it’s frustrating because he should know how we play and find another position at a set-piece.
“The referee invited me in to apologise but it doesn’t help me.
“But we had a lot of situations in the first half and a lot of counter situations but our last decision wasn’t the best.
“We created many chances but we weren’t clinical enough and maybe lost our heads in the last five minutes.
“We had more courage in the second half and we showed we can maybe be on the same page as them.”
“It’s one of his main qualities.”

Sunderland head coach Regis le Bris, per BBC Sport:
“It’s difficult to win away, especially at Hull. In the first half, we dominated the ball but failed to break the final third.
“The scenario in the second half was different, they kept the ball and it was not easy to deal with the way they build up the game and we did well.
“The momentum was with them and they had a big chance to score and they didn’t. We were prepared to use our counter attacks as we had that strength and Wilson made the difference.”
When asked by Sky Sports if he understood why Hull were unhappy, Le Bris said: “Not really.”
Le Bris to Sky Sports:
“It was a tough game away, it was difficult.
“It was difficult [for Isidor] because he ran for 45-60 metres in the end, and he needed to make a good decision, and he did it very well.
“I think this is one of his main qualities. So, it wasn’t a surprise for me – it might be a surprise for the Championship, but for me it was not a surprise because he has the ability to repeat and multiply this action and express his strengths.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Tim Walter reveals what the referee said over controversy as Regis le Bris dismisses complaints…
@Hag_SAFC: Why on earth did sky cameras give him so much attention during today’s 90 mins? I saw as much of him as I did of the on-field play. He is not Jose Mourinho!
@haymansafc: Player takes corner and passes to own player. That player plays ball towards the ref who steps out of the way giving the Hull player plenty of space and time. Hull player turns into Neil who pokes the ball away. Wilson then runs about 75 yards and finishes. 🤷🏻♂️ #SAFC #HULSUN
@cjrossy81: This ref was shocking at turf few week ago, makes it all about him, yet he makes a mistake & makes it about him showing hull manager yellow, the big Iam, reason y you lost your position In refereeing in premier league.
@MattyHC5: We do see it everyday. We see it every week. Shocking officiating once again.
@TC7123: Does not surprise me to learn that it was Bobby Madley refereeing…
@luke_henryy: Referees are way too protected by the FA.
@JWYOUFC: Refs are cowards & hide behind giving yellow cards when they get called out for their actions.
@owen_whitford: 1-0 to the referee
@Soley1904: Single handedly one of the worst things I’ve ever seen a referee do in a game of football. I’d be fuming if it was U7s. This is the Championship. Disgraceful. #hcafc
@chrishurst82: Ref got in Dan Neil’s way earlier in game. Led to counter attack. We just had defenders defending 😂🤷🏼♂️
@jtwHCAFC: Does speak some tosh
@LewisAJ18:
Goal: Isidor
Assist: Madley
@MitchSimpson: Ref’s fault but he did it to Neil in the first half and you broke from it. You just didn’t score
@Beerd_AF: People blaming the ref for this need to give their head a wobble
The exact same thing happened to us in the game, but our defence prevented the breakaway.pic.twitter.com/6xcIPGgxRR https://t.co/KqPEcyRFfJ
