Paul Mullin hilariously pokes fun at Rotherham boss Steve Evans after Wrexham’s 1-0 win

Paul Mullin hilariously pokes fun at Rotherham boss Steve Evans via Instagram after Wrexham’s 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

In September, Evans said Wrexham were the ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ of League One after being was asked how Rotherham measure up against some the other sides in the division who are seen as promotion candidates.

At the time, Evans said: “We’ve not played the Real Madrid of League One – we play them a week on Saturday [when Birmingham visit the New York Stadium].

“And we’ve not played the Harlem Globetrotters, who will turn up when Parky (Phil Parkinson) brings Wrexham here with the stars that come with the ownership there.”

“The standards at the top of this league are going to be quite awesome at the end of the season,” Evans added on Rotherham’s website.

Paul Mullin has now offered his response, having kept the comparison in mind for when Wrexham faced Rotherham.

Mullin wrote: “Good 1.0 win for the Harlem Globetrotters today… thanks for the great support 🙌🏼❤️”

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: “It’s a great result for us at a tough place to come.

“Getting the early goal was terrific for us and I’m delighted for [Mullin] who produced a brilliant finish as he has done time and again for us.

“But it was also the all-round discipline, fighting spirit and quality when we needed it was great today. We were against a team who were in the Championship last season but it was a controlled performance both with and without the ball.”

On Mullin, he added, per The Leader: “I felt he was really back to his best in training last week.

“After 10 games, to be in contention and pain free with his back would have taken that.

“Sometimes, there’s expectancy on Paul from himself because of what he’s done for us.

“He played the Wolves game and scored, had a few days off with the rest of the lads and he came back in really firing on all cylinders last week. The break did him good.

“His goal was brilliant but his all-round display for the team was top class.”

Parkinson went on: “It was a great bit of play straight from the kick-off, an outstanding cross from Barney and a brilliant finish from Mulls.

“It is what he has done time and time again for us over the years, and he scores all different types of goals. He has got that ability and I’m really pleased for him .

“He’s started four games this season, including in the EFL Trophy, and scored three goals so his ratio is pretty good.”

“I felt he was looking strong.

“You have got to remember Mulls is an athlete, he is a fit lad; as he has shown time and time again, he can run the hard yards for the team which we need.

“The days of having a luxury goalscorer at the top of the pitch are long gone in football.

“Everybody has got to work, everybody has got to press, and Mulls and Ollie did that brilliantly.

“When Fletch came on, he just switched straight into that for us and was unlucky not to get a goal as well.”

Rotherham boss Steve Evans said, per Rotherham Advertiser: “Straight from the kick-off, we don’t compete for the first ball. It was launched forward. Then it’s a good ball in, to be fair, and Mullin does what Mullin does.

“We had nearly 70 per cent possession, 17 goal attempts, numerous corners, numerous free-kicks.”

“There were big moments in the game, big chances. We think Joe Powell should have a penalty in the first half.

“Second half, we get a wonderful chance for Sam. He spins and … strikers at the top level in this league score the goal and you’re back in the game.”

Speaking to the official website, he said: “We started in the worst fashion you could going one down in fifteen seconds and I can pick three errors out of that without looking at a replay of the goal. We kick off and don’t challenge for the first ball. Then we’ve a centre-back who steps off his striker. Then Paul Mullin does what he does, but nobody was picking him up.

“Then for five or ten minutes we looked a bit shaky but after that we had some belief. We dominated possession, we dominated battles, we dominated the ball. But we lost one-nil. But other teams have to come here and if we play as well as that we’ll be fine.

“But, as well as having total dominance we need to be ruthless. We had two good chances in the first half and three or four in the second some of which looked harder to miss than score. I’ve told the players we’ve got to take those chances but we will take that type of performance week in week out.

“The supporters here can be brutal as in they tell you the truth but I don’t think, at one-nil down, there was a person who left the stadium with Wrexham holding on but the goal just wouldn’t come. We didn’t get that break but I thought if we’d got one we’d have got three or four.”

Evans was sat in the stands having picked up a touchline ban, he said, ‘You can see more from there. The communication to the bench was good and the staff couldn’t have done any more.’

On missing injured Jonson Clarke-Harris: ‘We missed JCH today. I’m sure he’d have liked to have been on the end of some of those shots at goal. And there was an argument for Liam Kelly to start today but five weeks out well we’ll see what he’s like after a couple of days training.’
