Richard Kone scores perfect nine-minute hat-trick in Wycombe’s 3-1 win against Peterborough

Richard Kone comes off the bench and scores a perfect nine-minute hat-trick in Wycombe’s 3-1 win against Peterborough.

The Posh went ahead on 50 minutes, when a dangerous cross from the right met Jade-Jones at the back stick and he tapped home.

15 minutes later, McCleary’s shot was beautifully nodded down by Kone and he found the net thanks to slight a deflection.

On 68 minutes, after Kone saw his low shot is saved and Leahy’s powerful strike beaten away, Kone then headed home Scowen’s looping effort to put Wycombe ahead.

Then with under 20 minutes to go, the Chairboys were awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Fernandez sent off for a second yellow card.

Leahy left the penalty for Kone to take, and he sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-1.

“I’ve got to say thank you to him because he let me have it (the penalty),” Richard Kone, who between 2019 and 2024 scored 125 goals in 148 matches for Athletic Newham, told BBC Three Counties Radio.

“I was just trying to see if I could get at least one to get us back in the game and to get two more, I couldn’t ask for more.

“I’m always working to try and learn more, trying to improve myself, and learn from the boys – they are all helping me in my career in this league.”

“We know Richard’s got goals in his feet, it’s just about managing him and managing those moments (to bring him on),” said Bloomfield, who has used Kone as an impact substitute in almost half of his 29 league appearances.

“I actually thought Dan Udoh was excellent in the time before Rich was on the pitch, but then goes and plays left wing for us – he’s just such a selfless character.

“For him to perform like that and then be so pleased for Rich, you saw the celebrations he had with him.”

On Leahy giving the penalty to Kone: “Luke is a real leader for us and it’s nice that he passed that responsibility over to Richard.”

Wycombe: Ravizzoli, Grimmer, Low, Taylor, Harvie, Morley (Butcher 91′), McCleary (Kodua 81′), Humphreys (Leahy 62′), Scowen (Bakinson 81′), Onyedinma (Kone 61′), Udoh

Subs: Butcher, Leahy, Bakinson, George, Kodua, Kone, Skura

Peterborough: Steer, Dornelly (Curtis 73′), Fernandez, Wallin (Odoh 82′), Sparkes, O’Brien-Brady (De Havilland 45′), Collins, Poku (Hayes 82′), Randall, Mothersille (Nevett 73′), Jones

Subs: Bilokapic, Curtis, De Havilland, Odoh, Nevett, Hayes, Ihionvien

The result sees Wycombe sitting 3rd in League One with 20 points from 10 games played, while Peterboorugh are 15th with 15 points from 12 games played.

Speaking at full time, Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said, per Bucks Free Press: โ€œThis is not good enough and we need to be honest here.

โ€œWeโ€™re failing miserably at the moment in terms of one part of the pitch in particular, but it is my responsibility to improve.

โ€œItโ€™s not plain sailing as a manager, but you need to find that desire and find a way to continue putting in that extra work.

โ€œSometimes is about the desire in keeping the ball out of the net and the first goal we conceded is appalling.

โ€œWe need to be honest here โ€“ we are way off.

โ€œIf you keep conceding three goals a game, youโ€™re going to be in trouble.โ€
