‘Not on fire anymore’ – Will Grigg laughs back with 2 late goals after ‘getting stick’ from a Newport County fan while warming up.
Chesterfield substitute Will Grigg came off the bench to net twice late on to seal a 3-0 win at Newport after a bad mix upย between Exiles goalkeeper Nick Townsend and centre-back Kyle Jameson after just 43 seconds with Markanday rolling ball into an empty net.
Grigg was getting himself ready to potentially be subbed on, but while down the line, he was on the end of receiving some playful banter from one Exiles fan, saying he wasn’t on fire anymore.
He soon shut them up however, netting a double as Chesterfield, who had drawn their previous three matches 2-2, claiming all three points to move up to 7th in the League Two table, while Newport are 15th.

Interviewer: There’s a fantastic video going around on social media. I think it’s gone absolutely viral. I’m guessing you’ve seen it. A couple of lads giving you stick, and you put on the sideline, and then you came on and scored 2 goals. So what’s your opinion on the video first of all, and how sort of pleasing was it to sort of, I guess, stick it to those lads that were giving you some stuff on the sidelines and go on and score 2 goals?
Will Grigg: Yeah. I mean, first of all, my my phone was sort of going off more than it does usually. So I was thinking something’s going on here, and then, yeah. I obviously saw the video. Yeah. To to be fair, I thought, you know, the the fans are really good fun. You’d obviously warming up is is interesting in general in front of the fans, but, yeah, the first time we went out, they were they were giving us a bit of stick. And, yeah, to be fair, they were they were really good fun. Then that was probably the second or third time we’ve been out. It was late in the second half, and, yeah, it was I think you probably see Banksy’s having a little word in my ear saying this to be funny soon. So, yeah, obviously, it was great to to come on and and sort of shut them up, but it’s just a shame it was down the other end. I think if, you know, if I had, if I had the legs in me and done an ad by Orem and the hole in the pitch to me slide in front of him, that would have been funny, but, yeah, they’re a little bit too far to to go and celebrate, unfortunately.
Interviewer: Is it fair to say that you showed that Will Grigg is still on fire?
Will Grigg: Yeah. You could say that. Yeah. It was, yeah. I think warming up in league 2 on the bench was was an interesting shot and obviously Grigg is not on fire, but, yeah. It was, it was a nice way to sort of, to shut them up I guess, and, yeah. Quite funny.
Chesterfield score from terrible mix up after 42 seconds and Newport denied ‘clear goal’
When if it was a good point, Cook said, per Derbyshire Times: โYeah, without a shadow of a doubt, we have never got nothing here.
โWe are always going to be a tad disappointed when you have led.
โWe had some unbelievably good moments of football and then some other stuff where you are wondering what we are trying to do. When you donโt have that continuity in team selection, you are going to get some of that. We had partnerships on the pitch again tonight who havenโt probably played together, a little bit is on me, but some of it was taken away with the injuries.
โWe had a team which was thrown on us a little bit with some injuries that have come from Saturday which is disappointing because we wanted to pick a lot of the same team again because we felt it was a strong performance so that was taken away from us.
โAll in all, it was a good point, it is always a tough place to come. There is no such thing as an easy stroll in the park at Bromley away. You have to earn everything.
โI am a bit disappointed but also a bit pleased we got a point.โ
On Griggโs double: โI am delighted for Will. I just felt we should score again because of the way Bromley come onto you and the spaces they leave in areas where we felt we could hurt them but we never actually capitalised how we should which is a little bit disappointing but there you go.โ
