Chesterfield score from terrible mix up after 42 seconds and Newport denied ‘clear goal’

Chesterfield score from a terrible mix up after 42 seconds and Newport County say they were denied a ‘clear goal’ in their 3-0 defeat.

After just 43 seconds, a lack of communication from both goalkeeper Nick Townsend and centre-back Kyle Jameson allowed Dilan Markanday to roll into an unguarded goal.

Newport County manager Nelson Jardim thought his side should have been awarded a goal, the Exiles felt they should have been given an equaliser when goalkeeper Max Thompson potentially carried the ball over the line from a corner in the second half, only for appeals to be ignored.

Then Will Grigg twice late on to pick up all three points for the Spireites.

The result means that Chesterfield move up to 7th in League Two with 18 points from 12 games played while Newport are 13th with 14 points from same games played.

Newport boss Nelson Jardim said: “It wasn’t a good start. I think it lost us a little bit of confidence and we didn’t quite find the right passes in the first half.

“At half-time we put things right, made the subs that we needed to and we saw improvements right away.

“I think the boys tried, they did their best, but obviously when you commit little mistakes you pay a big price. I guess that is what happened today.

“I think we did improve, we created three or four goal scoring chances, it is just unlucky we didn’t score one. If we could have taken at least one then I think we could have got the game back.

“I think it was clear goal, we will have to assess it better, but everyone is telling me that it was a goal, the players, some of the staff as well.

“If we could have scored a goal in that moment I think we would have been on top of the game. We would have had more energy to score a second. We didn’t and I think we paid a big price for not.”

He added: “It hurts [the result]. It hurts the fans, it hurts the players. Everyone is suffering.

“The fans tried to help the team, during the second half we had the fans with us.

“Now it is about bouncing back which is what we are going to do on Tuesday.”

“It is a great night for the players and we have given our supporters a little glimpse of being in the top seven,” Cook told 1866 Sport.

“Let’s try our best to cement the top seven and let’s try our best to kick-on from there. We are going to have plenty of bumps, plenty of bruises, but we are enjoying it. Hopefully now we can try to put back-to-back wins together that might just see us in a good position in this league.”

“It was a really good performance tonight in terms of character and desire,” Cook continued.

“We had to dig in tonight, Newport put it on us, they did not deserve to be on the end of a 3-0 scoreline.

“We had to dig it out and then your quality will come through. We have got too many good players.

“The most important thing we have been working on is getting crosses in the box because we have got two of the best finishes you have seen in (Paddy) Madden and Grigg and we have got to give them more supply.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Chesterfield score from a terrible mix up after 42 seconds and Newport claim they were denied a ‘clear goal’…

@BLFNCAFC: Bet Jardim will come out and say we played good…

@izzyperry2001: Embarrassing. Boys against men

@CaitBennett_: Last night was really really bad wasn’t it

@William_Downs_: Fed up of gifting teams goals. Chesterfield were nothing special. Playing 1 up top doesn’t work. Defence is atrocious and with the amount of goals we leak. Antwi is poor, glennon is woeful 🤣

@Ncafcgez: Fucking shit 😡🤬

@_R_J_A_: I don’t like singling out players, but Glennon is not a defender. Great passer of the ball going forward but thats it. Notably Morris (who should have gone off instead or Wildig) Antwi and Jameson were poor yet again and CBR did little until the last 15 mins

@seabrook20408: Abysmal again sunday league 1st goal how the hell was he allowed to get in between two defenders for the 2nd and the 3rd sat on his arse !! No one came out of that with any credit !! I have lost ciunt now how many times we av gone from inside the opposition half back to keeper !

@stevergoodall: Some of the best fans we’ve had at the parade this year. Came down in numbers on a Friday night when it’s on Tv. Bad night for us alas.

@OliverCrowther4: Will Grigg, what a player 😍 Cookie super subs tonight, fantastic lads 👏🏼🔵⚪️

@markhaynes47: Will Grigg scoring Will Grigg goals.. oh and 2 fab assists from Ollie too

@rocjam93: Can only applaud that performance. Good away following as well 👏🏻

@sisaac1988: Brilliant tonight all round 👌🏽

@DaviesRudi: Superb win against a team that won’t lose many at home. Best attackers/attacking options in the league, by some distance too. Markanday and Araujo shouldn’t be playing in this league. Up the fucking Town

@jimmyT_08: Scrappy performance, 3 points and a clean sheet. Perfect result. Metcalfe MOM for me.
