Tim Sherwood baffles fans after having Cole Palmer squirming with awkward interview question

Tim Sherwood baffles fans after having Cole Palmer squirming with an awkward interview question after Chelsea beat Newcastle.

Tim Sherwood gave an uncomfortable interview with Cole Palmer that left the Blues player looking shocked following their 3-2 victory over Newcastle.

Chelsea picked up their first league win since the middle of February beating the Magpies, thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson, Palmer himself, and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak had levelled Jackson’s opener before Jacob Murphy scored one later on – but Mauricio Pochettino’s team managed to hold on.

Palmer, who scored a goal and provided an assist against Eddie Howe’s team, was interviewed on the pitch after the match by ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood.

However, the line of questioning he chose puzzled fans and seemed to make Palmer uncomfortable.

Sherwood’s comments about Palmer’s teammates raised eyebrows after his outstanding performance this season.

‘All you need are some players to play with,’ Sherwood said, and then an awkward pause followed as Palmer looked back at him with a blank face.

Sherwood, a regular face on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, then said: ‘I know you can’t say that, but I’m saying it. I just think you need more quality around you.

‘For me, [Pochettino] needs to build the team around you – with the quality you have, but that will come with a few transfer windows hopefully once he gets the right players in.’

Palmer replied to Sherwood to insist ‘there is a lot of quality there’ despite his comments, saying: ‘Not just me, we’ve got lots of other players. Hopefully, the team can gel a bit more than everyone has seen.’

Palmer has now has 13 goals and 10 assists for Chelsea this season, giving himself a huge chance of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 this summer.

Chelsea goalscorer Cole Palmer, speaking to Sky Sports, says: “We’ve had some difficult results, obviously the cup final against Liverpool so to get the points is vital. We showed passion, courage winning the second ball and not getting bullied. As a young team we’re going to make mistakes.”

On moving from Manchester City to Chelsea last summer: “I thought I was ready to play football week in, week out and that’s the reason. I just wanted to showcase my ability and thankfully it has paid off. It was a very difficult decision to leave City, I was there since six years old. I was ready to play football, had a chat with my family, had a chat with the club and moved to Chelsea.”

On getting into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros: “If you had told me at the start of the season I had a chance to go to the Euros I wouldn’t have believed it. I will just take it each game as it comes and see what happens in the summer.”

On Chelsea’s critics: “There’s so much talent around Chelsea that the fans don’t see and you [the media] don’t see. If not next season, the season after, you will see it sooner or later. We’re still in the FA Cup and hopefully win on Sunday to get to Wembley again.”

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “When they scored we thought we better defend better than we did than when we conceded. It was a great goal [from Jacob Murphy], but to get three points is a step in the right direction.”

On Mudryk and Jackson scoring: “We know as a team the quality they have, them performing is really encouraging. Of course scoring a goal like they did would give anyone confidence.”

On possible England call-up: “Hopefully we will see, it is game-by-game and hopefully I put in good performances – we’ll see what happens.”

On Pochettino and pressure of fans: “It’s important again we win football matches, the fans will be happy and we have to try do that.

“The way he [Pochettino] treats us everyday the players love him and I sure the fans will as a result.”

On it being a good season if they qualify for Europe: “I don’t about a good season, but better than not being in Europe – game-by-game and we’ll see how we finish.”

As mentioned, Tim Sherwood baffles fans after having Cole Palmer squirming with his awkward interview question…

@CriminalCosta: What’s he supposed to say to that “yeah me teammates are shit hopefully we sort it out”

@fwokabe: 😭😭😭 look at cole’s face when he says that

@AdeyemiAdekola5: He’s trying to set him up, trying to put words in his mouth. But Palmer handled it really well.

@HLTCO: Huge credit to Cole Palmer for the way he handled that question from Tim Sherwood. He’s put him on the spot on live TV with a genuinely provocative question which could have got Palmer in a lot of hot water and he batted it away in the perfect fashion.

@GottaBigMouth: Has Sherwood been out with Parlour as he sounds a little, lubricated. I was just waiting for him to go, ‘ear, come ‘ear. You see you, yeah. I. I. Bloody love you yeah. You’re like, the bestest. Yeah. Good lad. Hic.

@TavernFootball: Let us also not forget that Sherwood was replaced at Tottenham by Pochettino. I think he’s still very bitter about that fact

@AshJamIng: Surprised Sherwood didn’t take all the credit and say he discovered him himself

@JoeSturman: Sherwood is such a weird bloke.

@ColinPep1: Palmer has done well. Looked annoyed by being asked that too but didn’t let it cloud his response. Not sure why Sherwood would do that to him. Even if people think it, you don’t ask a player to speak of his teammates like that. One for discussion in the studio, not to a player

@Boxxy91: Stop giving this clown airtime.. he’s an idiot

@CarefreeMF: Why is Tim Sherwood openly trying to get Palmer to shit on his teammates, like what did he actually want Palmer to reply with?

@willfordy25: Tim Sherwood is an awful man.

@ytalksfootball: Tim can’t be putting Palmer on the spot like that. What can he possibly say? “Yeah they’re pants mate, I agree”? 😂 This is something he can tell him privately or even on TV without Palmer there part of the punditry is fine but directly to Palmer like this is nuts. Not right.

@iwearnicejeans: This is the punditry and analysis that we’re served up way too often. A random oddball with no real background, time and time again has proved his knowledge is obscenely low, given the job to interview a young player + attempt to put words in his mouth to match his agenda.

@ChelsBlue1905: Why is Tim Sherwood still around, absolute muppet

@FrazFletcher: What a bizarre question from Tim Sherwood last night 😵‍💫 Cole Palmer handled it very well indeed #CFC

@Dovzeey: how does Tim Sherwood still get airtime as a “pundit” 🤔

@Johnny_w_Hill: Tim sherwood was a terrible manager and an even worse pundit… how he gets on TV talking football is beyond me

@AVFCTheReligion: Tim Sherwood just doesn’t care 😂

@HCfootball01: Ridiculous by Tim Sherwood that. Stupid comment and not even a fkin question, Palmer handled it well but I would of just walked off.

@sidazp: Ask clueless Tim sherwood, all our players would easily walked into his failed Tottenham team that never won anything. Man has hated Chelsea for ages

@CarefreeMF: Why is Tim Sherwood openly trying to get Palmer to shit on his teammates, like what did he actually want Palmer to reply with?

@CFC_KJT: Tim Sherwood is a wanker how can you say something so unprofessional in an interview

@jiggybulko: Tim Sherwood 😂 what a weird bloke! What’s he wants palmer to do, agree and slag the rest of his team off on TV 🥴

@Paolo_Hr: The fact that more people aren’t reacting to this unanimously is beyond me… Incredibly disrespectful and unprofessional to say something to a player about his own teammates. Also a pathetic attempt to take advantage of Palmer’s inexperience by tryna get a reaction out of him.

@Pooliemags1Ttv: And Tim wonders why his managerial career was shite

@martynaino06: I like sherwood but that question was really below the belt, devoid of any wisdom and a lack of respect to his teammates, embarrassing punditry 🤦🏽‍♂️

@BallinginSurrey: Sherwood’s right but he shouldn’t put him on the spot like that

@Jeeves__: This is weird, how awkward for Palmer ffs 😂

@tim_bunn: When you’ve had one too many with your mates after the mid-week 5-a-side game.

@WatchedToffee: Sherwood had a few Guinness here? Classy response from Palmer.
