Three coaches ended up getting sent off in a mass fight during the Championship fixture Stoke v Barnsley on Wednesday night.
Goalkeeper Brad Collins saved a penalty and made a string of fine saves to earn a point for the Tykes.
The hosts, who had won three of their previous four league games, would have put themselves into the top two were it not for Collins’ superb save just before the break.
After Tommy Smith was sent off late on for the home side, Stoke coaches Dean Holden and Rory Delap, plus Barnsley assistant Joe Laumann were also shown red cards following an ugly touchline melee.
90′ It’s all spilled over in the dugouts with Barnsley’s bench trying to waste time. There was a fist thrown into Dean Holden’s head.

It was a rather slow start at the bet365 Stadium and it took nine minutes for the first opportunity to arrive.
Smith sent in a cross towards the far post for Vrancic, but he was denied by a last-ditch intervention from Barnsley wide man Toby Sibbick.
Romal Palmer put in a neat pass into the path of Cauley Woodrow and he saw a curling strike from 20 yards brilliantly palmed behind by Stoke stopper Joe Bursik.
Stoke broke the deadlock on the 17th minute when Smith whipped in another cross which Michal Helik tried and failed to clear, leaving Sam Surridge to tap home his fourth goal of the season.
On the 38th minute, after Callum Styles had been needlessly bundled over, Woodrow stepped up and smashed a free-kick spectacularly into the top corner of the net from 22 yards out to level the scores.
The hosts then fluffed a great opportunity to retake the lead with the final kick of the first half.
In the second half, Surridge had been clipped by Collins in the box and a penalty awarded by referee Leigh Doughty, the clearly-aggrieved Barnsley keeper dramatically responded by superbly palming Vrancic’s spot-kick onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Stoke’s Michael O’Neill: “We were trying to win the game and Dean went in there trying to get the ball back. It was clear the Barnsley staff were trying to slow the game down, but a punch was thrown and the next thing you know there’s 20 or 30 people involved.
“There was nothing really behind it, other than us trying to retrieve the ball. I won’t ever be angry with my staff for that. We were attempting to get the game going again and trying to win the game with 10 men. I’m not sure how we ended with two of our staff being sent off, but I’ve no issue with my staff sticking up for one another.”
Barnsley’s Markus Schopp: “It all started with the Smith red card I think. The Stoke staff weren’t happy. It was an unnecessary situation, but I didn’t see too much of it. Maybe we should have been a bit more quiet but the Stoke staff had been shouting at ours. There had been arguing after the player had been sent off. Both teams were clearly desperate to get the three points and this is sometimes what can happen.
“Brad was like a wall between the goal. His performance was unbelievable. It was a really special day for us and I’m delighted. He always does a great job for us and he proved that tonight.”
Fans reacted after three were sent off in the mass fight during Stoke v Barnsley…
@joshjeff11: rory delap wanted to take the throw in
@RefereeAldo: Expertly handled in a calm manner by a great set of officials all communicating and working together to try and sort out a bunch of grown men acting like children! This behaviour filters down to grass roots levels and it’s good to see strong decisions made by the officials.
@DanAbbott_BC: I think what we really need to know is why Stoke’s coaches are wearing a green tracksuit at home
@PeterFearns: Scenes nobody* wants to see. *Everybody
@leeboy1886: It always makes me laugh when all the players rush over to get involved especially the keepers they literally run half the pitch to get there. I’m sure it would have not looked half as bad if the players stayed away from it.
@GoatGabriel_: 40 year old men you know 😂
@cannondog79: They should have sent the other Barnsley coach off as well, he clearly slaps Holden at the start…
@JakeyyB95: So if players kick the ball away for time wasting its a yellow card but when the Barnsley manager attempted to do it he gets nothing 🤷♂️ agree with decision with our coaches and Barnsley assistant but why did the manager get away with it 🤔
@StokeyyG2: and Dean got sent off for it, EFL officials at its finest
@stokehaz: have em dean
@stonier_rachel: Exciting this! Normally it’s boring when we’re on sky. Not tonight. Been a cracking game of footy, the bench is all kicking off. Love football
How has the bloke on the right got away with it. Trying to do the sleeper hold 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/4eBiyHBD8w
