Thousands have took to sign a petition for Cody’s Law – with an update made on two men charged with murdering the 23 year old footballer.

Remy Gordon, 22, and Kami Carpenter, 21, are being charged with Cody Fisher’s murder after he was fatally stabbed in the Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham on Boxing Day.

Both Birmingham-based defendants were also charged for affray and had been remanded in custody before Monday’s preliminary hearing.

They spoke only to confirm personal details and enter not guilty pleas to a linked charge of affray, and were not asked to enter a plea to a charge of murdering.

Afer a four-minute hearing before two magistrates, the two were ordered to reappear before a judge at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday with a further hearing was set for the 30th of January 2023.

According to the West Midlands Police, Cody Fisher was fatally attacked on the dancefloor at the nightclub with the club’s licence was suspended for 28 days on Friday.

The force also claimed that the venue had suffered “serious management failures” on the night he was killed.

Birmingham city councilors say that they will review whether the club should be closed permanently at a future hearing.

Police claimed that Fisher was killed on the dancefloor with officers who witnessed the scene “described chaos and evidence of drug abuse within the premises” as the basis for their request for review.

Officers found a knife at the crime scene and confirmed that Fisher had died from a stab injury.

Jess Chatwin, his girlfriend, paid tribute to him on Twitter a day after he lost is life.

She wrote: “You didn’t deserve any of this. I’m so sorry this has happened to you my baby please come home. I love you forever Cody Fisher.”

A 22-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of the player’s murder has been released on bail while police enquiries continue, while four other people were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender before also being released on bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Ingram from West Midlands Police said: “This is a significant development in our investigation as we seek to get justice for Cody, his family and friends.

“We’ve received fantastic support from the public who’ve really helped us in our enquiries so far.

“However, we’re still really keen to hear from anyone with information who has not already spoken to us. Every piece of information helps our investigation.”

In the last few days, the public have signed a petition calling on nightclubs to introduce metal detectors and bleed kits.

10,000 signatures and counting demand for more protection for those attending nightclubs.

The petition on Change.org, calls for metal detectors and bleed kits at clubs and events – and this has been shared a huge amount online from family friends and football clubs.

One friend, James Behan, told Sky News: “The impact it’s had on myself, family and friends… We were part of a friendship group that has a hole now that can’t be filled. I was out the night it happened, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

“He had an infectious smile, a love for life, his friends, football, his family. And it’s just tragic. Just horrendous.”

Kelsey Mooney, who said he was out with Cody Fisher two nights before on Christmas Eve, said to Sky News: “Anyone that knew him wouldn’t say a bad word about him. That’s the thing, he was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time.”

He said he woke up to a phone call from one of his friends, telling him: “Code’s dead”.

Mr Behan as slammed security on the night at Crane nightclub, which cancelled a New Year’s Eve party following the incident, saying: “It’s very easy to cancel future sets and future nights, but the security and checks need to be stepped up massively for events like this… There just needed to be a lot more… Something like this could have been prevented, massively.”

In response to previous claims that security on the night was inadequate, the nightclub said: “We have a thorough search policy in place for any and all patrons entering and leaving the venue. This includes the deployment of metal detectors, pat downs, pocket checks, wallet inspections, bag searches and age verification procedures.

“Searches are conducted in accordance with SIA (Security Industry Authority) guidance and best practice. The venue is patrolled by SIA security staff whom responded to the incident as it unfolded on the night…

“On Boxing Day we had an onsite paramedic led team as per our venue policy, who arrived at the scene quickly to administer first aid to the victim until the arrival of the Ambulance Service.”
