Thackley AFC appoint ex-Bradford, Halifax, Crawley, Barrow player as joint-manager

Thackley AFC appoint ex-Bradford, Halifax, Crawley, Barrow player Danny Forrest as the new joint-manager, along with Tom Greaves.

Forrest comes into the club, hoping that he can be of help to long-standing friendship Tom Greaves with Thackley hoping they can climb up the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

They currently sit 15th, with 25 points from 22 games, nine points above the drop zone and hope with the new managers, they can climb the table.

Thackley get set to face Guiseley in a friendly on Tuesday night (24th January), depending on the pitch, and failing that, they are scheduled to face Bottesford Town at home on the 28th.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Thackley AFC are pleased to confirm that Tom Greaves and Danny Forrest have been appointed as Joint Managers of the First Team.

Greaves has been Player/Assistant Manager at the Club since joining in the summer of 2022 from Bury AFC and is Thackley AFC’s current top goal-scorer with 20 goals already this season. Greaves has previous management experience at FC United of Manchester, a role which he also combined with his playing career as he continued to lead the line for “FC United”, going on to become their record goal-scorer. Greaves will continue in a Player/Manager capacity for the Dennyboys, with his position as Joint Manager now being made permanent, following his successful spell as Interim-Manager after the departure of Patrick McGuire last month.

The Club are also delighted to confirm that Forrest has agreed to join the Dennyboys and will take his position as Joint Manager alongside Greaves. Forrest joins the Club after leaving his role as Assistant Manager at Guiseley AFC in November 2022 having worked alongside Manager Danny Ellis at the Northern Premier League, Premier Division Club. Prior to that, Forrest was Silsden AFC’s Manager in the NCEL Premier Division, a role he held for 6 years prior to joining Guiseley AFC, having led the Silsden to promotion from the North West Counties First Division. Prior to management, Forrest began his playing career at Bradford City where he made 50 appearances as a striker, before playing for Clubs including Halifax Town, Crawley Town, Barrow and Guiseley AFC.

– STATEMENT ENDS –

Forrest departed the role as Silsden manager in May 2022 to become an assistant to Danny Ellis at Guiseley, only to leave in November after Ellis was given the boot.

Talking to Telegraph & Argus, Forrest said: “I’ve not played alongside Tom, but I’ve known his brother Jimmy since me and him were are at college together in our late teens.

“That meant I became friends with Tom too, so I’ve known him for 15 years or so, and we’ve always kept in touch, socialised in the same circles, and had respect for each other’s careers.

“He’s a good lad, and I think the combination of the two of us in charge will be a good thing.

He said on Greaves, who is expect to keep playing as the club’s key player: “Tom aspires to play still and he’s physically in a good place, his 20 goals this season prove he still has plenty left in the tank.

“I think Thackley’s defeat to Goole last time out showed the club needed someone senior in the dugout while he’s playing.

“Tom spoke to me about helping him and I spoke to him and Ben Oliver (Thackley’s chairman) about it.

“The whole club have been supportive, especially Ben.”

He said having matches postponed recently has helped him spend time with his side before managing the first match: “If you flip that into a positive, it’s given me time to take training, to get in amongst it and impose my ideas.

“There’s nothing like playing games though, and I’m excited for that, so this break has been a bit frustrating.”
