Tempers flare between Bournemouth and Brentford at full time with Jordan Henderson restrained

Tempers flare between Bournemouth and Brentford at full time with Jordan Henderson, in the thick of it, having to be restrained.

A TNT Sports commentator was heard at the end of the game saying: “But a night that ends in acrimony. Jordan Henderson right in the thick of things. Grappling in the mouth of the tunnel. Never backwards and coming forwards.

“And ugly scenes to end what has been an engrossing goalless draw here. Andoni Iraola playing the role of peacemaker.

“As the two sector players and staff have to be separated in the final throws of this contest.”

Talking to media, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said he “cannot accept” the decision to not award his side a penalty, claiming Marcus Tavernier was impeded by Brentford defender Michael Kayode before he hit the woodwork early in the second half, only for referee Craig Pawson to be not interested.

The Cherries had missed a host of chances and struck the post twice while also extending their unbeaten run to nine Premier League games.

Bournemouth thought they went ahead when Evanilson slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher in the 79th minute, only for the offside flag to go up.

The result sees the Cherries climb up to 9th in the Premier League table on 40 points, while Brentford remain 7th with 44 points.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s difficult to explain, I think we played really well today, one of the best games we’ve played lately.

“We had good chances but overall we controlled Brentford, a team that plays at a high level. But we haven’t won it. We’ve hit two posts. Ryan Christie had a clear, clear chance. I think the penalty, I still cannot accept [how] we haven’t had a penalty on Tavernier. Somehow we haven’t won, I don’t know how.

“It’s a point. It’s very little seeing our performance and our needs. There are also a lot of positives but probably at this stage of the season you need the points.

“We are drawing a lot of games. Draws don’t get you a lot. Yes we go to 40 and that’s a big positive in the end looking at the big picture. But in this moment after a game we feel the frustration.

“Some draws are fair and you feel it is a very good point for us. Today, no. I cannot accept. I have to defend my players, but I am sorry I cannot accept after the reviews that they say it is not a penalty. He [Michael Kayode] loses his position and stands on the calf of [Marcus] Tavernier. Yes, somehow he finishes, but this is so clear the penalty. I cannot understand it.”

On the two benches squaring up after full-time: “I wasn’t in the mix. I think Jordan Henderson and Kroups [Junior Kroupi] are exchanging words. But nothing happened in the end.”

Iraola to TNT Sports: “I think we played really well. We haven’t scored but we have been clearly the better team. We had the better chances and I think we should have won it. But football is like this.

“We hit the post, but there is also a clear penalty. It is impossible not to [give]. I cannot accept it. It’s a shame, we’re going to talk about the penalty when we played really well. It isn’t acceptable.

“I am even more angry if they decide after watching the replays it isn’t enough. I am much more angry. It is clear [Michael] Kayode has lost the position and he just stretches his leg.

“They probably don’t call it because [Marcus] Tavernier stretches his leg and somehow finish the play. But still it is a penalty. Studs on the calf of Tavernier, you see the replays. I cannot find the reason. OK. I’m so frustrated.”

Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson to TNT Sports: “I thought it was a good game. Maybe both will be disappointed they didn’t win the game. Overall we felt comfortable but they had decent chances, they hit the post and had a goal disallowed. I still felt we had our moments. So maybe a draw was a fair result in the end.”

On looking frustrated about being substitute: “Did I? That’s normal.

“We’ve learnt from mistakes in the first half of the season. We’re in a pretty good place at the moment. We just need to keep improving.

“For us it’s about staying humble and doing all the things we’ve done this season which is working hard for each other. But also just playing with the confidence and freedom to try and win games.”

Brentford manager Keith Andrews to BBC Match of the Day: “Both teams tried their upmost to win the game, I don’t think either teams were settling for a 0-0, right up until the end both teams had chances.

“We couldn’t quite find our best work with the ball, but without the ball tonight I thought we were excellent, a good reaction. To come here and get a clean sheet was really pleasing.

“I don’t think luck ever hinders. I thought there was a resilience from the group and the way we went about it. We controlled parts of the game. But the woodwork is there for a reason. Did it help? Yeah, probably.”

On Bournemouth’s penalty shout: “I haven’t watched it back. I’m not one to study clips afterwards to come out and give a really informed opinion because ultimately it doesn’t really matter. The game’s gone. I didn’t think it was at the time. I’ll look at it back but I didn’t think it was live.

“The priority was to get back to basics. That was a real priority coming into this game. If you do all those things and do that well you’ve got a real chance of a clean sheet. I think we did that tonight.”

On players from both teams squaring up after full-time: “Not really sure. I definitely didn’t start it. I think the game was played with a really competitive edge tonight. It probably spilt over a little bit at the end.”

Here’s the social media reaction after tempers flare between Bournemouth and Brentford at full time with Jordan Henderson restrained…

@ReeceDSport: Really enjoy Keith Andrews role here. In the middle of it, looking like he’s doing something but doing absolutely nothing to break it up

@SensibleSAFC: Take the boy out of Sunlun etc

@EmmaBfc90: No idea what this was even about but it was the most interesting thing to happen all evening

@crooktownsafc: He just wanted to get into the dressing room to check that Sunderland had won!!

@JWLFC98: We miss this man so much, would run through a brick wall for us and now we’ve got 17 year olds thinking they’re too good to press

@BR3N7FORD: At least we showed some fight tonight…….. Ashame it was off the pitch though.

@JLyall93: Not the goalfest we reckoned was on the cards but a wee bit of full-time biff at the Vitality. Anothet strong away point for Brentford. A 13th Premier League draw for Bournemouth, who should have taken one of their chances.
