Swansea City unveil new club crest and kits – goes down a hit with fans

Swansea City unveil a new club crest and a pair of kits for the 2021/22 season and it’s gone down a hit with fans who want it to stay.

The badge will be used to mark the 40th anniversary of the club’s first ever promotion to the top-flight in 1981.

John Toshack guided the club to a third place finish in Division Two as the Swans went into Division One along with West Ham and Notts County.

That remarkable success was then followed by a 6th place finish in the top-flight as Swansea enjoyed a golden age.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Swansea City is excited to reveal a new club crest for the 2021-22 campaign, which includes a nod to one of the greatest achievements in our 109-year history.

The crest, which will adorn our home, away and goalkeeper kits throughout the upcoming Championship season, is inspired by the 40th anniversary of the Swans’ first-ever promotion to the top-flight in 1981.

The original badge design was used on a number of the club’s printed and promotional materials during that unforgettable period as John Toshack’s side reached the First Division in 1981, before launching a top-flight title assault on their way to a sixth-place finish the following season.

The crest was displayed on matchday programmes and posters and flyers for upcoming fixtures – as can be seen in the image below – and featured a Swan sitting atop the castle from the city’s coat of arms.

The new design is an updated, modernised representation of that crest, which supporters will remember was also used as the club badge on Swansea City’s jerseys between 1992 and 1997.

But the decision to return to a version of the design is meant as an acknowledgement and homage to a golden era in Swansea’s history with the likes of Alan Curtis, Robbie James, Leighton James, Wyndham Evans, Jeremy Charles and Nigel Stevenson among those to play starring roles in the early 1980s.

If you want to relive that period you can access a series of new written and video features put together to mark the 40th anniversary of promotion at Preston in 1981 HERE and HERE.

KIT STATEMENT:

Swansea City and Joma are delighted to unveil the club’s home and away kits for the 2021-22 season.

The kits for the new campaign form part of a commemoration of the 40-year anniversary of the Swans playing in the First Division for the first time in the club’s history in 1981.

Three promotions in the space of four seasons saw the club reach the top-flight under John Toshack, before a highly impressive sixth-place finish in 1982, which included an assault on the First Division title for long parts of the season.

The kits have been designed with a deliberate retro feel, taking cues from some of the designs worn by the likes of Wyndham Evans, Alan Curtis, Robbie James, Jeremy Charles and Nigel Stevenson during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

It was announced last month that two local brands will feature on the shirts, with Swansea University continuing as front of shirt sponsor, whilst Westacres will feature on the back of the shirt for the first time.

The 2021-22 home shirt features the traditional black and white, including a classic stripe design in the material. This shirt has been created from 100% recycled fibres, making it the most sustainable product the club has ever released.

On the road, the Swans will wear a black shirt featuring a zig zag stripe throughout.

The goalkeeper kits, meanwhile, will have a short sleeve, meaning a change from the conventional long sleeves.

The yellow goalkeeper kit boasts a red and blue retro stripe, with the other shirt royal blue in colour with white and red detailing.

These kits have been modelled on the club’s away kit worn in the 1978-79 season as well as the 1981-82 royal blue design.
