Sunderland sh*thousery on social media after derby day win against Newcastle

Sunderland continue with their sh*thousery celebrations on social media after their derby day win against Newcastle.

The game saw Anthony Gordon capitalise on a horrible error from Sunderland, a moment to forget for Luke O’Nien who saw his pass out of defence go straight to Woltemade who intercepted, the ball falling to Gordon, who made his way around Alderete and O’Nien, then smashed it to put the hosts ahead on the 10th minute.

Newcastle went closer to a second just before half time, a fine Lewis Hall delivery was met by Sven Botman, but his header came back against the woodwork.

Sunderland were level on 57 minutes, Aaron Ramsdale pushed away following a corner, Trai Hume knocked the ball back in, Brian Brobbey attempted to score at the far post, only to be blocked by Dan Burn, then it fell to Chemsdine Talbi, who made sure of it went in.

Newcastle thought they had gone back in front shortly after, Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the goal was disallowed due to Jacob Murphy blocking off Melker Ellborg and being in an offside position.

But it was Sunderland who came away with the three points, Enzo Le FΓ©e with a pass in from the byline and after Brian Brobbey had his first shot saved by Aaron Ramsdale, he netted the rebound.

Sunderland went full “sh*thousery” mode with a number of cheeky, trolling posts, including updating their cover photo and also pointing out their unbeaten run of 11 league games against Newcastle.

Fans couldn’t help but wind up Newcastle fans on the metro back home after the game. Continue having a look at the social media posts which have since emerged following the final whistle.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, speaking to Sky Sports on how they got the win:Β “Through our identity. We didn’t start well with an early mistake. We stayed composed, well-aligned with what we wanted to do. It’s a tough place, they are intense with their crowd but the team reacted well. We were emotional at half-time because it matters, this game is important and we didn’t want to lose. We stayed together, pushed together and the second half was good for that. We suffered at times but we enjoyed as well some opportunities and played good football.”

On the emotion:Β “It was about the whole event. We want to win and to be proud of our club. I really appreciated the second half, even the way the team reacted after the goal conceded, stay calm, stay composed and seize your opportunity when it comes.”

On Brian Brobbey:Β “He is getting better day after day. He is impressive. We needed more time as a team to find the right connections. The way we can use his strength especially. Now he is becoming a big threat and it’s big for the club.”

On what he was trying to achieve by playing out from the back for the Newcastle goal:Β “I don’t know. You can make mistakes. It’s a hard phase when we start from a dead ball. I know the intention, but the execution wasn’t good.”

On what this result does for the team going forward:Β “We started this game with six or seven players injured. It means the others stepped up and it shows the quality of the group. Today they did really well, I am proud and really pleased.”

On the reported abuse from the crowd towards Lutsharel Geertruida:Β “I don’t really know what happened, but it’s not acceptable. The referee acted well because he reported the problem which is the first step. He [Geertruida] seems ok, but we will see.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports:Β “Painful, tough afternoon for us. Positive start, I thought when we scored we would go on and dominate but we never capitalised on that momentum. The first half fizzed out and second half we were second best. I didn’t like our performance. Technically we were poor. The defeat is harsh on us but we didn’t play well enough.”

On if the fixture pile-up played a part:Β ‘I’m reluctant to use that as an excuse. Logic would tell you yes, but we have to do better. We have to really look at ourselves and make sure we learn from all the mistakes we have made and we made a few today. This has happened before, it isn’t a one off.”

On Thiaw’s disallowed goal:Β “These are big momentum swingers for us. We wanted a second goal, we couldn’t find it. Sunderland grew into the game. We needed to defend with our lives and defend better than we did.”

On his message to players:Β “We have some massive games to come. Week to week we are able to train and get that freshness back. We have had to learn a lot. It’s going to need a lot of character to respond. We never give up, we always go for what we can.”

On the match being paused for alleged racist abuse from the crowd:Β “We don’t condone any form of racism and it’s something the club will investigate.”

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, speaking to Sky Sports:Β “If you want to play these games you need personality. It’s not easy to play here. We knew before the game what it means to come here to take something or to win. If you see all the game, three points are deserved.”

On recovering from the early Newcastle goal:Β “We didn’t find solutions in the beginning. It’s part of the game, a part of our journey. We spoke at half-time about things, we changed and second half was nearly perfect.”

On what the win says about Sunderland:Β “We need to step up. Some players didn’t have a lot of minutes. We are a team, it’s not just the first 11. Today was a great win for all the team. After three defeats in a row, today was a very important three points. Now we go to the national team and come back for the last run.”

Sunderland’s match winner Brian Brobbey, speaking to Sky Sports:Β “You saw second half everybody was better, everybody gave everything for each other. After the first goal everyone ran for each other, I’m really happy for the win.”

On what it meant to score the winning goal in front of the travelling Sunderland fans:Β “A lot, the fans are always with us. It means a lot.”
