Matthias Jaissle gives his first interview on becoming Newcastle’s new head coach, signing a four-year deal, until 2030.
He comes in as replacement for Eddie Howe, who left the club after five years on the 31st of July, telling Newcastle that he wants to take a break from football.
Jaissle, who last managed Al Ahli, will have to prepare quickly for the new season, with it just 18 days until his first competitive game, against Liverpool on Sunday, the 23rd of August.

A statement on the club website read:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach.
Widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading young coaches, the 38-year-old German arrives on Tyneside following remarkable success with both Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli.
Following a thorough, rigorous and confidential recruitment process, Matthias emerged as the clear outstanding candidate to lead the club into an exciting new chapter.
At just 33 years of age, Matthias was appointed head coach of Red Bull Salzburg and enjoyed immediate success in Austria, winning a domestic double in his first season. He also guided the club to the UEFA
Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history before securing a second consecutive league title and further European progress in the UEFA Europa League.
After joining Al-Ahli, he quickly transformed the side into one of Asia’s leading teams, securing qualification for the AFC Champions League in his first season. He leaves after leading the club to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles, becoming the first coach to achieve the feat.
Matthias’ ability to develop players, build resilient, cohesive and high-energy teams, and contribute to elite high-performance environments has distinguished him throughout his coaching career.
Just as importantly, his football philosophy and leadership style are strongly aligned with the direction, ambitions and culture of Newcastle United.
David Hopkinson, Newcastle United’s CEO, said: “Matthias is one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in football and I’m thrilled to welcome him to Newcastle United.
“We have conducted a thorough process, and he has emerged as the clear candidate for the role. He possesses all the qualities we were looking for.
“His track record of success, leadership qualities and relentless drive to improve make him an exceptional fit for Newcastle United. We believe he is the right person to lead the club into the next phase of our journey.”
The club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, said: “Matthias’ leadership style and football philosophy are strongly aligned with our sporting vision. His teams play high-energy football and we could feel his passion during all of our discussions throughout the recruitment process.
“He has consistently demonstrated an ability to improve players, build cohesive teams and create elite performance environments in his coaching career.
“His successes at Salzburg and Al-Ahli underline his ability to deliver results while developing a clear football identity. We believe he is uniquely positioned to build on the strong foundations already in place and help take Newcastle United forward.”

Matthias said: “It is an incredible honour to become head coach of Newcastle United. This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand.
“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice. The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be. I have followed the club’s journey closely in recent years and the progress that has been made is clear for everyone to see.
“I am incredibly excited about the future. I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking. There is a clear vision, strong leadership and an exceptional platform to build on.
“My teams are built on togetherness, hard work, intensity and a passion to improve every single day. I will bring full commitment, full energy and a determination to give everything I have to help this club achieve its ambitions.
“I believe there is enormous potential within this squad and throughout the football club. I am excited to work with the players, staff and leadership team to help take the club forward.
“I cannot wait to get started and will attack this opportunity. I give my complete commitment and total energy to bringing further success to Newcastle United.”
Matthias begins his role immediately and his coaching team at Newcastle United will be announced shortly.

He also told the club’s media: “Always front-footed, really intense, aggressive, definitely vertical in our approach… how we want to play football.
“I think that’s a perfect fit to the DNA of Newcastle United. There are also some values for me that are not negotiable. We just talked with the staff members about these three values I use: trust, respect and pure commitment.
“If everyone is on the same boat and we go in the same direction, then it’s going to be a really successful journey. We only have three weeks (until the start of the season). Now is the transition. We try to build up what Eddie was doing here, an amazing development over the last (few) years, and we just try to build on that.
“If the fans behind us are giving us that energy, then I think that synergy is an amazing weapon we can use in the league. I’m really, really looking forward to seeing them in St James’ Park.
“It will be straight away all about intensity, going forward, don’t hesitate (and) trying to bring that DNA straight away in the mind of the players. I can’t wait, honestly.
“Please support us like you did in the past, to go together on that journey, now in that challenging moment what we have in the transition, building on what was already (here), what was built amazingly. Now we go forward and we need everyone of them in the stadium, in the city and, together with the players and the staff, we can be a unit and a real weapon.”
