Sunderland fans silenced after giving it large before James Trafford saves two late penalties

Sunderland fans were silenced after giving it large before Burnley keeper James Trafford saves two late stoppage time penalties.

Fan footage has emerged of the moment captured from the stands, showing the reaction of Burnley fans and the away end going quiet.

On 86 minutes, CJ Egan-Riley went into the book for the challenge what some thought looked to be just outside the box but that decision couldn’t be changed, giving Sunderland a chance to nick it.

Burnley keeper James Trafford stepped up and saved Wilson Isidor’s spot kick, diving low to his right.

Dennis Cirkin then went into the box for Sunderland and Oliver Sonne slid in, while there wasn’t a lot of contact, Cirkin went down, the referee pointed to the spot and Sunderland had another chance to win it, this time on 95 minutes.

A big coming together took place between the two sets of players after the decision and Dan Ballard was booked for Sunderland.

James Trafford again kept out Wilson Isidor, a similar kick to the first Trafford keeps it at 0-0, meaning Burnley’s eighth goalless draw sees them stay second and go level on points with Leeds at the top of the Championship.

Sunderland would have gone above them if Wilson Isidor had stuck away either of those penalties. Instead, the Black Cats stay in fourth.

Burnley goalkeeper and double penalty-save hero James Trafford told Sky Sports: “I just had to get CJ [Egan-Riley] out of trouble. I got him out of trouble and then he made a great trouble. It’s what we do. We’ve done it since we were 12.

On making Wilson Isidor wait to take the penalty on both occasions: “Nah, the first my laces were undone, the second, my hammy is crying.”

On whether he was surprised Isidor took the second penalty: “Yeah, I was surprised he stepped up twice to be fair.”

Does it feel like a win? “That’s what you remember because it happened late on but we had the better chances. If you take the two penalties out of it, then the way we played, in my opinion, we should’ve won.

“It probably feels like a win in the long-term. It’s a nice feeling isn’t it?”

Burnley boss Scott Parker speaking to Sky Sports: “I think it’s a massive point when you look at it on reflection.

“Two penalties and two magnificent saves and looking at it where I’m sitting, it’s a valuable point for us.

“James Trafford has been a vital part of what we’ve done, a huge talent who still needs refining and this year he’s took that on really. They were incredible saves.

“He definitely earned us a point tonight. Those two penalties were coming at pace, they were fantastic saves.”

Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley told Sky Sports: “I knew it was [outside the box – the foul for the first penalty].

“But the ref had a bad game. Even the second one I’m not sure about. Like Traff said, we’ve been playing together since we were 11 years old.

“He’s got me out the rubbish however many times and tonight he did it on the biggest stage that he has.

“For me as a defender, I’d have no one else in the world behind me in the sticks than him, because I know if I make a mistake, he’s there for me.

“He’s done it again, I’m not even surprised at this point, he’s been doing it for 10 years.”

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a good game. Burnley started well, they were very good but it’s always hard to manage long balls in behind and they were good in that moment.

“But we solved the problems and I think we finished the first half well. The second half was good, we created big chances. We probably deserved to win but football is like that.”

On James Trafford’s delays before saving two penalties: “It’s smart because it’s a way to break the rhythm, you can introduce doubt.

“It works for them and the referee has to judge but it’s done and we have to turn the page.”

Twitter users gave their reaction at Sunderland fans being silenced after giving it large before James Trafford saves two late penalties…

@David180000: That first one is a mile outside the box. I can see that on my mobile from a a video a fan took at the back of a stand. Yet the ref can’t who’s 5 yards away? The level of officiating is in the gutter

@18AVFC74: Why would you give it the big one before you’ve even scored 🤣🤣 absolute melts

@OxfQPR91: Note to ginge, that’s why you don’t celebrate getting penalties 😅 especially like you’ve already scored it! 🤣
