Top six favourites to become new Stockport County manager

The top six favourites to become new Stockport County manager as the club confirms the sacking of Simon Rusk after a 2-1 loss against Barnet.

The 39-year-old, who was previously with coaching youngster at Brighton, took over from Jim Gannon in January and guided the Hatters to the playoffs last season.

However, they lost to Hartlepool United in the semi-finals and Tuesday’s defeat by the Bees left them 10th in the National League after 12 matches this season, yet were favourites for promotion in summer 2021.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Following a difficult start to the season, the board have made the decision to part company with Manager Simon Rusk.

Simon will leave the club with immediate effect alongside Assistant Manager Mark McGhee, as the club restructures its coaching staff focused on future success and progression.

We would like to thank Simon and Mark for their hard work, integrity, and dedication to the club during their tenure, including last season’s 18 game unbeaten run.

In the interim, First Team Coach Dave Conlon will take the helm, with the support of the wider coaching staff.

No further comment will be made until a new appointment has been made.

Paul Ince – 8/1
Andy Morrison – 8/1
Michael Flynn – 8/1
Chris Beech – 10/1

Former footballer turned manager Keith Hill is the current favourite to takeover at Edgeley Park.

In a 16-year-long playing career, Hill was a centre back who represented Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale, Cheltenham Town, Wrexham and Morecambe.

After retiring as a player, he went into coaching at Rochdale, and was twice the club’s manager until sacked in March 2019. Following this, he endured a difficult spell as manager of hometown club Bolton Wanderers following their points deduction. He was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers on 21 November 2020, but was sacked after the team reached the League Two playoffs in May 2021.

Stockport fans state who they want as new manager as the club confirms Wednesday’s sacking, see what Twitter are saying below…

@wdy_jones: Get in. Had to go. Come on now @1DaveCon you got this. Hes worked under both of the recent regimes (so hopefully knows what works) and was really the only one who seemed to try to do owt lastnite. Steady the ship and take us forward. DC’s blue and white army

@davescounty: Is Dave Conlon is the new younger Version of Alan lord

@chris_eaton_: Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Both are excellent coaches with integrity and are honest and hardworking people. If we had a whole squad of staff like that we wouldn’t go wrong.

@SirStevieYT: We sacked a successful club legend for this. If anyone else had done this we’d be pissing ourselves. Wish Rusk the best for the future. If the club wanted to win the fans back quickly and get back on track then reinstating a certain manager might do the trick

@HatterNorth: Best decision made bring in flynn ex Newport boss

@mitch_bancroft: All the best for the future, Simon. I’ve called for your head but it wasn’t personal. Hope you can bounce back and go on to have a good career.

@WJFOrchard: Can’t believe we sacked Gannon for this shower and now he’s gone anyway. Wilson next please.

@daveespley: Unless you also flirt Wilson, you’re just kicking the can down the road.

@M_Traynor_: So in the end it turns out hiring a guy from the seaside kids league was NOT a recipe for success. Well I never.

@RickLoader87: Sorry it didn’t work out, seemed like a nice guy but was never going to end well when you was brought in to replace a club legend. Right decision. All the best for the future Simon

@BenMeek15: Sad that it didn’t work out. We will soon see if Rusk was the real issue or not, all the best for the future Simon

@BillyBy17: Yet the people responsible for appointing him and taking this club backwards remain in position ?

@ColWright27: Very sorry to see him go. Wish him all the best in his next role. Hope we don’t turn into another Watford and change managers far too often.

@1882Tom: When’s Jim Gannon expected back?

@StevenBMedia: Come on @StevenCunny

@renny_overton: Get Jim Gannon in

@lord_ian: Never nice hearing of a dismissal, but this was rather inevitable. Simon Wilson will remain at SCFC I’m sure, and there are still questions whether he has a say in squad selections/ tactics. If so, I’m not convinced many experienced managers will take the job with that set up!

@sean_hermitage: If we don’t bring Jim back I want Conte

@lizzyb_xx: Pointless if @SiWils1 doesnt go too he still the man really in charge isnt he?!

@D_S_Schofield:
Simon Wilson has proven himself to be utterly incapable of his current role as Director of Football and simply removing Rusk solves nothing.
Sacking Gannon – Ridiculous
Appointing Rusk – Unfathomable
Recruitment Policy – Shambolic
Sack him now.

@stevano_b2: Should of stuck with a good experienced manager who punched way above his division in managerial terms.
One Mr James Gannon.
@james16gannon

@Mad_Hatter_79: The Wilson Out message now needs to be actively driven home until those in power realise that we’ve had enough of his inept mismanagement. #stockportcounty

@GrumpyBarlow: Not surprised as the performances and results have just not been good enough this season despite the squad we have. It was a massive gamble by the club get rid of a club legend in Jim Gannon in January and appoint Brighton U23s manager in his place

@SCFCConnorG: quick heads up @StockportCounty, we can only appoint a manager with a name with 4 syllables otherwise we can’t sing _______________’s blue and white army

@ryan7507; I know what @StockportCounty plan is. They will announce the new appointment on Sunday Oct 31st, Halloween. The new manager will be Jim ‘The Ghost’ Gannon. They’ve been playing us all this time, the crafty, wealthy bastards.

@Gax1980: About bloody time! Good luck Simon, no hard feeling and wish you all the best but not the the right man for county unfortunately. Now to get someone in who knows how to manage in the national league and get us back up the table. Sod all that bloody “culture” bullshit!
