Steven Gerrard gives a brutal reaction on the performance of Jon Moss as fans say it’s the worse refereeing of the season.
The former Liverpool player was left reeling with Moss following Aston Villa’s defeat by his old club on Tuesday night.
Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 and maintain their challenge for the Premier League title. Douglas Luiz put Villa ahead just three minutes in when he was there for the rebound after Alisson pushed out his header, however it was cancelled out when Joel Matip equalised minutes later with a close-range finish.
Villa had plenty of chances to try and re-take the lead, but went on to fall behind when Sadio Mane flicked in an clever header from Luis Diaz’s cross.
Danny Ings had several chances and also saw a goal ruled out for offside as Villa unsuccessfully pushed for a point.

The game had plenty of tackles and incidents, heated and passionate, with 22 fouls split between the two sides, yet it was notable for its absence of yellow cards.
Moss chose not to dish out any cards and the experienced referee’s decision making proved not to be popular with the majority of the 41,919 fans inside Villa Park vent out their frustration at what they had just witnessed.
Gerrard initially refused to be drawn into criticising the display of Moss. “No comment, I just hope that it’s looked at. That’s all I say. I hope it’s looked at,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“Have I gone to talk to Jon Moss? No. I just hope his performance is looked at. I don’t want to be sour, Liverpool scored two goals against us and we need to look at that and I don’t want to cover over any cracks.”
Gerrard was then told that Moss is retiring at the end of the season. He replied: “Is he? Good.”
Moss is to follow the likes of Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson in retiring at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 51-year-old has taken a job with the PGMOL – the body responsible for match officials in English professional football and is set to become manager of the Select Group One, known as the best group of referees in the country, with Atkinson appointed as their coach.
This comes after the promotion of Jarred Gillett, Michael Salisbury, Tony Harrington and John Brooks to Group One.
The Times said in April that the Premier League had been planning to change the way its referees are trained. A new “elite referee development plan” is to be introduced with the hope of fast-tracking the training process, to allow new referees to officiate top matches quicker.
While he was far from satisfied with the refereeing, Gerrard also pointed out that his team could have earned a least a draw from the game, had they taken their chances.
“Possibly we should have got more but we have to take the big moments we create in the game,” he said. “We are frustrated we didn’t score more than once. The big positive for me was that we were ambitious, brave, courageous and went toe-to-toe against one of the best teams in the world. They have world-class players have that have been together for a long time, and my players haven’t let themselves down. I’m proud of them.”

Klopp said after the game: “Massive, outstanding, incredible mentality. We changed five of the team so we needed time to find our way into the game and the opponent was there from the beginning. The main issue was losing balls in the wrong areas. From there, it is difficult to get any rhythm.
“In the last 10 minutes of the first half, we began controlling the game. We scored the second incredible goal, Luis [Diaz] sensational, Sadio [Mane] made the world of it.
“Then, you have to dig deep. Yes, they had moments, a big chance with Ingsy [Danny Ings]. If my players were not as good as they are I would be here talking about different stuff but their quality and mentality is the reason why we are where we are.”
“It was a good cross from Diaz and I was in the box so I just had to put it in the net,” Mane told Sky Sports. “Even without power, I usually score and that’s what I tried to do. I know him very well, he’s a good player. Honestly I knew he was going to cross.”
Asked if this was his happiest time at Liverpool, Mane added: “When we win trophies, I was happier. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment. And try to score and assist for my team-mates. It’s for the team or nothing, the boys make it very easy for me, I’m very happy.”
Jordan Henderson added: “His performance was incredible. The work he does off the ball was incredible, defending at the end. But his quality in and around the box – it’s the gym isn’t it with those neck muscles! It was always going to be tough. We keep going.”
